Pecan Bayou Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD), in collaboration with Texas A&M Forest Service, Comanche Electric Cooperative Association, and Brown County, announces that the application window for the Community Wildfire Defense Grant (CWDG) Program has opened.
The CWDG Program offers 100% reimbursement to landowners in select priority areas for eligible brush management, tree and shrub pruning, and range planting. The program is funded through a grant from the USDA’s Community Wildfire Defense Grant program, administered through the US Forest Service and Texas A&M Forest Service. The intent of the program is to reduce the likelihood and severity of wildfires in and around communities in Brown County.
Priority areas for Round 1 include the Lake Shore, Shamrock Shore, Feather Bay, and Rocky Creek communities, among others. Priority areas are identified in the Brown County Community Wildfire Protection Plan. Additional priority areas will open in Round 2, anticipated later this year. An interactive map of Round 1 priority areas is available at: https://pecan-bayou-swcd.github.io/Brown-County-CWDG-Round-1-Map/
Applications will be accepted from April 24 through May 24, 2026. To apply, contact Cy Tongate at 325-430-3117 or joseph.tongate@yahoo.com, or stop by the Pecan Research Station at 701 CC Woodson, Brownwood, TX 76801.
