GLEN ROSE – The Brownwood Lions gave up 15 runs in the bottom of the first inning en route to a fifth straight District 6-4A baseball setback, 16-4, Thursday night at Glen Rose.
With the loss, the Lions (6-20, 1-7) trail fourth-place Mineral Wells (14-10-2, 3-5) by two games with two games left in the district schedule. Brownwood faces Mineral Wells twice next week, needing to win both games to keep its playoff hopes alive.
Glen Rose (14-13, 4-4), which moved into sole possession of third place in 6-4A with the win, sent 20 batters to the plate in the first inning and finished the game with 12 hits, and seven walks, while the Lions committed one error.
Seeing time on the mound for Brownwood were Harrison Sweaney, Blayne Stegemoller and Shaxton Simpson.
Offensively, the Lions scored all five of their runs in the top of the fifth inning. Brownwood started the frame with walks by Sweaney, Calder Damron and Kasyn Wooten. Simpson followed with a two-RBI single, ahead of an RBI double by Wyatt Wolf, and an RBI ground out by Robbie Robinson. Wolf scored the final run for the Lions on a wild pitch.
The Lions generated five hits – one each by Wolf, Sweaney, Stegemoller, Simpson and Daylyn Ansons.
