COLLEGE STATION, Texas—Texas A&M Forest Service recognized participants of the Texas A&M Forest Service Leadership Institute (TFSLI) during a graduation ceremony held April 9.

The institute brings together emerging and established leaders from natural resources and emergency management organizations across Texas to strengthen leadership skills and support collaboration across agencies. This year’s graduating class represents the program’s sixth cohort, with 20 participants representing 20 organizations across Texas.

Participants complete a series of in-person and virtual sessions focused on leadership development, teamwork and problem-solving, equipping them to better serve their organizations and communities.

“The Texas A&M Forest Service Leadership Institute has helped me become a more self-aware leader by cultivating curiosity about myself and others while providing me with tools and resources to grow my ability to lead others,” said Kevin Wessels, Texas Water Development Board. “TFSLI provides a supportive and vulnerable environment in which I felt cared for and empowered as a leader.”

“I gained a practical leadership toolkit to navigate difficult conversations, lead across generational differences, and engage teams with intention,” said Jessica Lazo, Harris County Flood Control District. “What sets this program apart is its focus on real world application. I’ve already used these tools to communicate more effectively, build alignment, and lead through complex challenges in my work.”

The program includes speakers, facilitated discussions and interactive learning opportunities aimed at helping participants think critically, solve complex problems and apply leadership skills in their daily work environments.

TFSLI continues a longstanding tradition of developing leaders who are equipped to make meaningful contributions within their organizations and communities across Texas.
