Canyon Drake Jackson, a beloved teacher, coach, and cherished member of his community, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 3, 2026, in Midland, Texas, surrounded by his loving family. Born on April 2, 2001, in Temple, Texas, Canyon lived a life marked by devotion to his faith, his family, and his students.
Canyon grew up in Eden, where he attended school until 2015. He then graduated from Panther Creek High School in 2019 before pursuing higher education at Angelo State University, where he completed his studies with a deep passion for teaching and athletics. His commitment to nurturing young minds and fostering teamwork was evident throughout his career.
He served as a physical education teacher for pre-K through 5th grade at Balmorhea Independent School District and was a dedicated athletic coach, guiding teams in football, basketball, and track. Canyon’s enthusiasm for coaching was not simply about sports; it was about the connections he built with each student, the lessons he imparted, and the encouragement he offered. Canyon also served as a Jr. High history teacher at Balmorhea. His love for his job was clear to all who knew him.
Canyon possessed a fun and outgoing personality that radiated warmth and care. He loved his family and friends immensely and openly displayed his strong faith through the love of Jesus Christ, a source of comfort and strength during his courageous battle with cancer. He faced his challenges with unwavering faith and dignity, inspiring all those around him.
In addition to his professional pursuits, Canyon enjoyed spending time playing video games with his brothers and participating in fantasy football with his team, “Cool Guys.” He was an avid fan of WWE, particularly following his favorite wrestler, Roman Reigns, who shared a similar struggle.
Canyon is lovingly survived by his parents, Seth Jackson of Balmorhea and Stacy Jackson of Fredericksburg. He leaves behind his siblings: Noah Jackson of Balmorhea; Mackenzie Gainer and her husband Aaron of Brownwood; Cheyenne Jackson of Lubbock; Skyler Jackson and significant other Matthew Basgall of Midland; and Ezra Jackson of Balmorhea. He also considered Brayan Avila of Valera as an honorary brother. Canyon treasured his nieces and nephews: Callie Braun, Sadie Braun, Jordy Braun, Leeroy Braun, and Keaton Gainer. He is further survived by his paternal grandfather, Earl Jackson, and his wife Myrna of Belton, along with family friend and devoted caregiver, Liz Bethune, who held a special place in his life.
Canyon was preceded in death by his grandparents, Frances Jackson, and Ross and Linda Barron, whose memories he cherished deeply.
