GRAHAM – The Brownwood Lions chalked up their first District 6-4A baseball victory of the season, hammering the Graham Steers, 11-1, Tuesday night.
The win also snapped a seven-game skid for the Lions (6-15, 1-2), who scored two runs each in the third, fourth and seventh innings, four runs in the sixth, and one run in the fifth to put away Graham (6-11-1, 0-3).
On the mound, Logan Flores went the distance and hurled a complete-game four-hitter with five strikeouts and four walks. The Lions defense committed four errors behind him.
Aided by 11 walks and a pair of Graham errors, the Lions offense also generated nine hits – two each by Wyatt Wolf, Robbie Robinson and Garrett Wilkerson, and one apiece by Shaxton Simpson, Daylyn Ansons and Carter Massey. Wilkerson also led the team with three RBIs trailed by a pair from Robinson and one each from Wolf and Simpson.
Brownwood opened a 2-0 lead in the third inning as Rhett Lowe and Massey both walked with one out in the inning and both scored on wild pitches.
The Lions stretched the lead to 4-0 in the fourth as Ansons, Calvert, and Lowe all walked to load the sacks. Ansons scored on an errant pickoff attempt, then Massey reached on a two-out error that allowed Calvert to come home.
The lead stood at 5-0 heading to the bottom of the fifth inning as Wilkerson’s two-out RBI single plated Wolf, who doubled to start the frame.
Brownwood boosted the advantage to 9-1 in the sixth as Massey singled and Wolf walked with one out ahead of an RBI base hit by Simpson that scored Massey. Robinson followed with an RBI single to left field to plate Wolf, then Wilkerson singled up the middle to bring home Simpson and Aden Smith, running for Robinson.
The final two runs for Brownwood crossed the plate in the seventh inning as Wolf’s one-out RBI single knocked in Lowe, who started the frame with a walk, and Robinson later plated Wolf with a two-out RBI single.
The Lions and Steers will wrap up their two-game District 6-4A series at 7 p.m. Thursday at Morris Southall Field.
