The Brownwood Lady Lions rallied with six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to grab a three-run advantage, but were unable to hold on as the District 6-4A front-running Brock Lady Eagles clawed back for a 8-7, eight-inning victory to wrap up the first half of the league softball slate Tuesday night.
Tied at 7 in the top of the eighth inning, Trinity Franklin led off with a single for Brock (16-9 5-0), moved to second base on a sacrifice, then stole third base where an errant throw to the bag allowed Franklin to come home on the play.
In the bottom of the eighth, Lady Lion Hanah Campos doubled with one out, but was left at third base when the contest ended.
The Lady Lions (14-11, 2-3) recorded 13 hits against Brock pitcher Ali Coleman, led by Campos, Adyn Lucas, Carlee Burks, Brenda Allen, Nevaeh Perez, and Amarrea Thomas with two each. Audrey Keas added one hit and two RBIs, while Campos and Brenda Allen logged two RBIs apiece as well.
In the circle, Kaydence Allen pitched all eight innings and yielded three earned runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts and four walks, as the Brownwood defense committed four errors behind her.
Trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the sixth, Lucas singled with one out and Burks reached on an error. Lucas later scored on the back end of a double steal with Burks, while Brenda Allen doubled home Burks to close the deficit to 4-3. Thomas followed with a single ahead of a two-RBI single to right field by Keas that pushed Brownwood in front, 5-4. Campos followed with a two-RBI single to center field, which staked the Lady Lions to a 7-4 lead.
In the top of the seventh, Kayden Blue walked and Jayci Smith singled ahead of a two-RBI triple by Sloan Booth, then Kathryn Utley’s sacrifice fly plated Booth with the tying run for Brock.
Brownwood scored the first run of the game in the second inning as Brenda Allen’s RBI single knocked in Lucas, who led off the frame with the base hit. Brock, however, tallied the next four runs to open a 4-1 advantage.
The Lady Lions start the second half of District 6-4A action at 6 p.m. Thursday when they host Glen Rose (15-10-1, 3-2), which defeated Brownwood by a 13-8 count in the league opener for both teams.
