STEPHENVILLE – The reigning Class 4A state champion Brownwood Lady Lions track and field team captured its second consecutive meet championship, and third overall this spring, thanks to a season high 206-point effort at the Stephenville Optimist Relays Thursday.

The Brownwood Lions, meanwhile, placed eighth with 24 points, leaving them behind Stephenville (152), Abilene Wylie (126), Abilene Cooper (102), Glen Rose (74), Stamford (44), San Angelo Lake View (42), and Breckenridge (38).

The Lady Lions, who outdistanced runner-up 5A Abilene High (132.5) by 73.5 points, earned gold medals in 13 of 17 events contested Thursday.

Leading the charge were Kaya Phillips and Grace Sparks, who both ended the day with four gold medals.

The defending state champion in the 200 meters, Phillips won that event (25.75) along with the 100 meters (11.9) and the long jump (18-9.25). Phillips and the rest of the 2025 Class 4A state champion 4×100 relay – comprised of Icess Hall, Jade Morin, and Aniah Hines – finished first as well (47.36) by more than three seconds.

Meanwhile, Sparks came in first in three individual events – the pole vault (12-0), the 100-meter hurdles (15.23), and the 300-meter hurdles (48.22) – as well as on the 4×400 relay team (4:05.11) with Rebekkah Delgado, Jaidyn Hope and Morin.

Also winning their events for the Lady Lions were Hope in the high jump (5-2), Delgado in the 400 meters (59.33), Nylah Hall in the triple jump (37-8.25), Kaydence Allen in the discus (115-9), and an altered 4×200 relay of Icess Hall, Eboni Baker, Nylah Hall, and Aniah Hines (1:45.4).

For the Lions, Trent Buffington captured a silver medal in the 200 meters (23.34) and Hutton Malone brought home a bronze medal in the pole vault (13-6).

In JV competition, the Lady Lions finished second to Abilene Wylie with 130.2 points, while the Lions came in ninth place with 16 points.

Some members of the Brownwood track team will be back in action next Thursday, April 2 at the Wall Relays, while others will compete at the Texas Relays on the campus of the University of Texas in Austin on Friday, April 3 and Saturday, April 4.
