GLEN ROSE – The Brownwood Lady Lions overcame a four-run deficit by scoring seven runs in the top of the fifth inning, only to give all seven of those runs back in the bottom half of the fifth en route to a 13-8 loss to the Glen Rose Lady Tigers in Tuesday’s District 6-4A softball opener for both teams.

The Lady Lions (12-9, 0-1) finished with seven hits – doubles by Hanah Campos, Audrey Keas, and Adyn Lucas, and singles by Lila Mares, Kendra Allen, Amarrea Thomas and Maitlyn Esquivel.

In the circle, Kaydence Allen allowed five earned runs on 11 hits with seven strikeouts and three walks as the Brownwood defense committed six errors behind her.

Trailing 4-0 after one inning, the Lady Lions scratched across their first run in the top of the second as Lila Mares led off with a single, moved to second base on an errant pick off throw, advanced to third base on a ground out, and scored on Kendra Allen’s RBI ground out.

Down 5-1 in the fifth, Brownwood erupted for seven runs as Campos doubled with one out and came home on an RBI double by Lucas to trim the deficit to 5-2. With two outs, Mares singled home Lucas to make the score 5-3, then Kaydence Allen was hit by a pitch ahead of Kendra Allen’s RBI single that closed the gap to 5-4. An RBI single by Thomas to left field knotted the score at 5, then Esquivel pushed Brownwood in front, 6-5, with an RBI single to right field. Keas then doubled home a pair of runs, as the Lady Lions shifted the momentum by grabbing an 8-5 advantage.

The lead was short lived, however, as Glen Rose (13-8-1, 1-0) countered with seven runs of its own in the bottom of the fifth as two walks, a hit batter, a pair of errors, a triple and two singles pushed Brownwood in a 12-8 hole. The Lady Tigers added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth for the final five-run margin.

The Lady Lions will attempt to secure their first league win at 6 p.m. Friday when they host Mineral Wells (16-5, 0-1), which is coming off a 12-0 loss to Brock (12-9, 1-0).
