Annis Walker

Mrs. Annis Walker, who was honored at Brownwood’s 2024 Juneteenth celebration as the city’s oldest living Black citizen, has passed away at the age of 87, leaving behind a remarkable legacy in the Brownwood community.

Annis Marie Walker was born on Friday, January 13, 1939, in Brenham, Texas, to Booker T. Hutchinson, Sr., and Corine Hutchinson.

Annis attended Rufus F. Hardin Elementary School in Brownwood, Texas. She accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at Little Zion Baptist Church. She later served as a Youth Usher and was a member of Mission II.

In July of 1982, Annis met Charlie Walker in Brownwood, Texas. Following their meeting, they were married on January 1, 1983, and built a life together.

Annis was deeply involved in her community, volunteering with Meals on Wheels, coordinating the Food Bank of Big Lake, mentoring youth, and serving as a longtime, faithful member of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Big Lake, Texas, until her passing.

As life came full circle, Annis was preceded in death by her loving husband, Charlie Walker; her parents, Booker T. Hutchinson and Corine Hutchinson; her siblings, Jimmy Hutchinson, Booker T. Hutchinson, Jr., and Ned R. Hutchinson; her grandchildren, Michael D. Tilmon and Mayere R. Tilmon; one great-grandson, Kaleb Johnson; and one great-great-granddaughter, Zamiyah Rodriguez.

Her children cherishing her memory are Milton Tilmon (Jodie) of Kerrville, Velma Butler (Neil) of Irving, Janet Bagley (James) and Aundrea Scott (Benjamin) of Brownwood, Crist Coleman (Dexter) of Grand Prairie, Michael Tilmon of Seattle,Washington and her bonus children David Wayne Walker (Leslie) of La Vernia, Teresa Walker Butler, and Victor Drake Walker of Waco.

She is also survived by her grandchildren: Nikki Moore, Kali Tilmon, Milton LaVan Reese (Ruby), Taranie Scott, McKenzie Tilmon (fiancé Mileesa), Kristophier Tilmon (Nitia), Benjamin Scott (Tamar), and Jasmine Tilmon. In addition, she is survived by 10 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, her siblings—Robert Hutchinson (JoAnn), Hazel Dudley (Sam), Nadine Oduor, and Bernice Hutchinson—as well as several nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends whom she lovingly called family.

A funeral service will be held at 12 pm on Saturday, March 14, 2026 at First Baptist Church in Big Lake, Texas with Rev. Gerry Henderson officiating. Interment will follow at Glen Rest Cemetery.
