DIAMOND ROUNDUP: Lady Horns move to 2-0 in district, Longhorns notch two tournament wins

Early Lady Horns 13, Peaster 3

WEATHERFORD – The Early Lady Horns improved to 13-4 on the season and 2-0 in District 8-3A softball action with a 13-3 victory over Peaster Friday, in a game moved to Weatherford College due to the threat of rain.

The Lady Horns jumped out to a 4-0 lead after half an inning, but Peaser crept to within 4-3 after four frames. In the fifth, Early put the game away with a seven-spot, then tacked on two more runs in the sixth to enforce the 10-run mercy rule.

Early belted a dozen hits – two each from Jamie Vassar and Kyleigh Caperton, who both homered, as well as Andie Simpson, while Paizlee Scott, Aleeya McCombs, Sydney Greaves, and Jaime Lyon each added one hit.

Vassar’s three RBIs were a team-high trailed by a pair from Caperton and one apiece from Scott and Lyon.

In the circle, Sunny Groom surrendered two earned runs on four hits with seven strikeouts and three walks, while the Early defense committed three errors behind her.

The Lady Horns are back in action at 5 p.m. Monday as they host 8-3A rival Comanche (1-12, 0-2).

Early Longhorns 6, Cisco 0

Early Longhorns 9, Albany 3

ALBANY – The Early Longhorns pushed their win streak to four with a pair of victories over Cisco and Albany at the Albany baseball tournament Friday.

In a 6-0 triumph over Cisco, Brennan Rasor hurled a two-hit shutout with six strikeouts and one walk.

Offensively for Early, Ben Wilson tallied two hits and a pair of RBIs, Jaxson Stockman added two hits and one RBI, Eli Pallette singled and drove in one, and Jack Howell contributed the sixth and final hit.

The Longhorns scored three runs apiece in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings.

The 9-3 victory over Albany saw Early score all its runs in the top of the first inning, while giving up three runs in the bottom of the third.

The eight-hit attack for the Longhorns featured two each from Stockman and Brayden Moya, and one apiece from Nowell, Wilson, Rasor and Weston Harrison.

Rasor led the way with a pair of RBIs and Moya, Stockman, Harrison, Will Speck and Angel Marquez were each credited with an RBI.

Nick Salazar pitched all three innings for the Longhorns, giving up one earned run on four hits with one strikeout and three walks, and the Early defense was charged with one error.

Next for the Longhorns is their District 8-3A opener at home against Comanche at 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Bangs Dragons 7, Hamilton 7

Dublin 12, Bangs Dragons 2

DE LEON – The Bangs Dragons tied a game and lost a game as they opened play in the De Leon baseball tournament Friday.

In a 7-7 deadlock with Hamilton, the Dragons trailed 6-2 going to fifth inning, but closed the gap to 6-3 there and scored four runs in the sixth for a 7-6 advantage. Hamilton, however, evened the score in its final at-bat.

Bangs amassed 11 hits – three by Kason Klutts, who drove in three; two each by Jaxon Duncan and Trapper Estess, who plated one apiece; one single and one RBI each from Rex Guerrero and Heath Laughlin; and singles from Connor Bible and Boyd Diaz.

On the mound, Bible and Klutts teamed up to allow three earned runs on three hits with seven strikeouts and three walks, as the Dragon defense committed four errors.

In the loss to Dublin, Bangs collected just two hits – by Laughlin and Duncan, who drove in a run. Klutts contributed an RBI in the Dragon effort.

Duncan, Estess and Brennan Mendieta combined to surrender five earned runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and eight walks on the mound, as the Dragons were credited with seven errors.

Bangs (1-7-1) is slated to conclude tournament play at 4:30 p.m. Saturday against Lipan.

Coahoma 6, May Tigers 5

COLORADO CITY – Seeking a second straight victory to open their baseball campaign, the May Tigers instead came up a run short in a 6-5 loss to Coahoma Friday afternoon.

The Tigers (1-0) fell behind 4-0 in the top of the first inning, but answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame. May evened the score at 4 in the third, but Coahoma tallied two runs in the fourth inning while the Tigers countered with only one.

May manufactured 14 hits – three by Kaden Watkins, who tripled twice and drove in a pair; two and an RBI each from Lane Goodson, who tripled, and Jackson Lusk, who doubled; two singles apiece from Brody Stice and Cayson Dail; and one hit each from Hunter Seider, Maddix Raffel, and Kayden Psencik.

On the mound, Seider, Justin McKinzie, Koltan Louthan and Ty McInnis combined to give up six runs on eight hits with nine strikeouts and eight walks.

The Tigers are slated to face Westbrook at noon and Ralls at 4 p.m. Saturday in Ira.

Coleman 16, Bangs Lady Dragons 2

BANGS – The Bangs Lady Dragons tumbled to 0-2 in District 7-2A softball action and 3-8 on the season with a 16-2 home loss to Coleman Friday.

Bangs chalked up four hits – two by Justice Baker, who hit a home run, and one apiece by Cheyenne Rush and Mattsyn Taylor.

In the circle, Rush worked all six innings and surrendered seven earned runs on 14 hits with eight strikeouts and five walks, as the Lady Dragons committed two errors behind her.

For Coleman, Victoria Guerrero led the barrage with four hits and two RBIs, Callie Campbell contributed two hits and four RBIs, Lily Norris recorded a pair of hits and drove in three, and Kylas Lange doubled and knocked in three. Elina Flores also finished with a pair of singles.

Norris gave up two earned runs on four hits with five strikeouts and two walks in the circle, to earn the win for Coleman

The Lady Dragons next host Cross Plains at 11 a.m. Monday.
