BURLESON – Soggy conditions couldn’t slow down the reigning Class 4A track and field state champion Brownwood Lady Lions Thursday, as they secured a second straight meet championship at the Steve Goben Invitational, hosted by Class 5A Burleson High School.
The Lady Lions produced 89 points, edging out runner-up Class 6A Mansfield, which tallied 87.5 points. Coming in third place in the final team standings was Class 5A Aledo with 65.5 points.
The 2025 4A state champion 4×100 relay team of Icess Hall, Kaya Phillips, Jade Morin, Aniah Hines won the event in Burleson Thursday in a time of 47.78. Phillips, who also earned a gold medal in the 200 meters at state last year, was clocked at 25.44 in Burleson to finish first. And the 4×200 relay, comprised as the same athletes as the 4×100 relay, also had the fastest time of the day at 1:42.53.
Due to technical difficulties created by the rainy conditions, the times for the 100 meters and 100-meter hurdles were not included in the final results. However, according to Lady Lions head coach Chelsy Lipsey, Grace Sparks and Jentry Coalson placed second and third in the hurdles, which would have added 14 points to Brownwood’s tally, and Icess Hall would have also been a point-producer in the 100 with a top six effort.
In JV action, Brownwood came in fourth with 48 points, which trailed meet champion Arlington Martin (97), Decatur (81) and Aledo (55).
The Lady Lions will next compete at the San Angelo Relays Friday, March 13 and Saturday, March 14, before hosting the Bluebonnet Relays at Gordon Wood Stadium Friday, March 20.
