KILLEEN – The Brownwood Lady Lions remained undefeated at the Killeen softball tournament Friday afternoon and extended their win streak to four games with a 8-6 triumph over reigning District 24-5A champion Bastrop.

Tied at 4 heading to the bottom of the second inning, the Lady Lions pieced together their second consecutive four-run frame to take control.

The Lady Lions started the second inning with back-to-back singles from Audrey Keas and Hanah Campos, then Adyn Lucas doubled home Keas for a 5-4 advantage. With one out, Carlee Burks doubled to left field, allowing both Keas and Campos to score to stretch the lead to 7-4. Then, with two down, Kaydence Allen doubled home Burks with the eighth run.

Brownwood faced a 3-0 deficit heading to the bottom of the first inning, but quickly surged ahead, 4-3.

Campos led off the frame with a walk and Lila Mares reached on a one-out error. Brenda Allen then delivered a two-out, two-RBI single to center field to trim the deficit to 3-2. Kaydence Allen followed with a walk and Amarrea Thomas was hit by a pitch to load the bases, where Maitlyn Esquivel pushed Brownwood in front, 4-3, with a two-RBI line drive to center field.

After its three-run opening at-bat, Bastrop evened the score at 4 in the top of the second inning, and tacked on single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to creep within 8-6. Brenda Allen stranded three Bastrop base runners in the final at-bat to secure the victory.

Kaydence Allen and Brenda Allen in five combined innings of work in the circle allowed just one earned run on four hits with seven strikeouts and two walks, as the Lady Lion defense committed four errors in the field.

Offensively, Brownwood finished with eight hits – two by Campos and one each by Lucas, Burks, Esquivel, Keas, Brenda Allen and Kaydence Allen.

The Lady Lions (4-1) will next compete in the championship game of the gold bracket of the Killeen tournament at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, against a yet to be determined foe.
