The Texas Department of Public Safety reported Thursday afternoon two fatalities from a two-vehicle collision that took place at 7:16 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11 at the intersection of State Highway 36 and FM 603 in Callahan County, approximately 25 miles west of Cross Plains.

According to the DPS report, a 2019 Nissan Altima passenger car was traveling southbound on FM 603 approaching a stop sign at the intersection with SH 36. A 2015 Freightliner truck tractor towing Utility semi-trailer was traveling westbound on SH 36 approaching the same intersection. The driver of car disregarded the stop sign and entered the intersection, where the car was struck by the semi.

The driver of the Nissan Altima, Kaley Demasters, 36, from Abilene, was pronounced dead at the scene and an 11-year-old female passenger in the car passed away en route to Hendrick Hospital.

The driver of the Freightliner, 43-year-old Santiago Reina Castaneda, from Pasadena, was transported to Hendrick Hospital with minor injuries.

The DPS report states it was unknown if any of three people involved in the accident were wearing seat belts.
