BROCK – Trailing by five points early in the second half, the Brownwood Lions fell victim to an 18-0 run by Brock, who reclaimed the District 6-4A boys basketball lead with their 67-41 victory Tuesday night.
The Lions (11-18, 1-7) trailed Brock (22-9, 7-1) by a 14-7 count after one quarter and 34-25 at halftime, before shaving the deficit to 34-29. By the end of the third period, however, Brock had stretched the lead to 56-34.
“We executed a game plan early on in the first half,” said Lions first-year head coach Jorden Young. “In the first quarter we were competing on the defensive end, but we couldn’t get some shots to fall and you could tell it deflated our confidence. The second half we didn’t have the same intensity, or maybe want to is the right word, we let it slip in the second half and it turned ugly.”
Cannon Calvert scored a team-high 10 points for the Lions, but was held off the scoreboard in the second half. Durham Brown tacked on eight points, Elias Perez and Santiago Alvizo added six each, Carson Noe tallied four, Grant Gray hit a three-pointer, and Jordan Gilbert and Bennett Windham each recorded two points.
The Lions will next host Mineral Wells (12-19, 0-8) at 7:15 p.m. Friday in a rematch of Brownwood’s on district victory, 58-56, on Jan. 29.
