BROCK – The No. 8 Brownwood Lady Lions did not record their first bucket until two minutes remained in the first half, as their worst offensive outing of the season resulted in a 42-19 loss to No. 3 Brock Tuesday night in a battle for the District 6-4A girls basketball championship.
“We struggled in just about every area that you could struggle in besides shooting free throws,” said Lady Lions head coach Heather Hohertz. “Brock came in and really pressured us, was physical with us defensively, and we just stayed out on the three-point line and didn’t try to attack the basket until it was too late. The only positive is we didn’t stop fighting, but it was just not a very good night for us.”
Brownwood (28-5, 8-2) trailed Brock (27-5, 10-0) – which converted four three-pointers in the first quarter – by an 18-0 count after the initial stanza. Down 22-0, the Lady Lions tallied their first points on a pair of Trinity Roberts free throws midway through the second quarter. Icess Hall then drained a three-pointer with just over two minutes left before halftime to make the score 24-5, where the score remained throughout intermission.
The Lady Lions sank six free throws and eventually converted their first two-point bucket, courtesy of Jaidyn Hope, with 15 seconds left in the third period, as Brock carried a 35-13 advantage into the fourth quarter.
Brownwood knocked down only 5 of 46 field goal attempts (11 percent) and 1 of 19 three-pointers (5 percent), while sinking 8 of 10 free throws (80 percent). The Lady Lions also
Icess Hall finished with eight points, Roberts added five, and Hope, Jentry Coalson and Demayha Hooker with two points each.
Brock was led by Laney Hudson with 17 points and Jacee Riddle chipped in 13 points.
The Lady Lions will open play in the Class 4A Division I girls basketball playoffs with a Region I bi-district encounter against Lubbock Estacado (13-17, 6-5) at 6 p.m. Monday at McMurry University in Abilene.
“Estacado is very athletic, they’re going to be in your face for four quarters,” Hohertz said. “They have some really good, athletic players, a couple of shooters and one of their post players can shoot and is really strong down low. We have four days to put on the game plan, and if this is not motivation for us, why do you play basketball and why are you a competitor?”
