It used to be something if you could name this year’s opponents in the Super Bowl, Number XL (60). I can remember barely, who won Super Bowl Number 1. Well, it wasn’t “Super Bowl” until three years later when they officially proclaimed it the Super Bowl.
Back then, it was the American Conference against the National Conference. It was the first time it had ever been played – ever. It may have been Green Bay and Dallas or something like that. Dallas, I think, was the fourth one to play in it but that’s when the Cowboys were really, really good. Anyway, the first one went to Green Bay and it was a good game in that the Packers won. The Packers won the second one also. Then they changed the rules and they said that this will be the first one although they will win Super Bowl Number III. A strange ballgame? Yes it was but it’s the only one I can remember. I can remember a couple of plays out of the others, but I remember every step of that Super Bowl Number III.
The winning quarterback was that “hot kid” Joe Willie Namath. He looks like he’s in a retirement home when you watch him on television these days. Joe Willie Namath – he quarterbacked the new league, the New York Jets. The other team? It was quarterbacked by the legendary Johnny Unitas. It was the Colts. The Colts and they came from Baltimore. They were really, really good. Almost every player picked them. It was unbelievable. Everybody expected them to win and not just win, win comfortably. So get ready, Joe Willie picks the Jets and the rest of the world it seemed like picks the Colts. No, this was the other one, this was the Jets. So, I watched in disbelief as did everyone and I watched the Jets roll to an easy, I think, 16-7 win.
If you had a game like that and put it on television today they would boo you until the next season came around. Hopefully this will be a good one and most people think it will be. You can almost have a classroom and say, “Anybody remember Super Bowl III which was really Number I?” People would say, “No.” “Do you remember Number II?” People would say, “No.” “So, do you remember Number III, the one where Joe Namath bragged about his team would win?” There’s no question in anyone’s mind. They did win! Baltimore pulled off one of the all-time lousy games in history. The Jets won 16-7 and it was unbelievable that New York had won and not only won, but for all time – all time – they lifted the AFC up to where the NFC had been by that one win. New York Jets 16 and Baltimore 7.
Until next time, so long everybody.
