Colton Buzzard led the Dragons to a 6-5 record and a playoff berth in his second season as head coach in 2025

BANGS – The Bangs Dragons will again head east for postseason football action, but venture south in district play as the UIL released its biennial realignment on Monday.

Still in Region II of Class 2A Division I, the Dragons shifted to District 7 and will battle familiar foe Coleman, while new league rivals for 2026-27 include Brady, San Saba, Johnson City and Mason.

“We’re in a location where we could go east, west, north or south,” said Bangs head coach Colton Buzzard, who led the Dragons to a 6-5 record and a playoff berth in his second campaign in 2025. “The biggest surprise was Johnson City, I don’t know much about them so that’s going to be new for us.”

Brady drops down after finishing with a 7-4 record last year and a share of the District 5-3A Division II championship; San Saba went 6-5 in 2025 and placed third in District 14-2A Division I, while Mason won that league en route to a 10-4 record and trip to the regional final. Johnson City, also a member of 14-2A Division I, posted a 5-6 mark and qualified for the playoffs at the fourth-place team, while Coleman went 2-8 and missed the playoffs as a member of District 5-2A Division I.

“It’s going to be fun, some good competition,” Buzzard said. “Any time you get someone like Mason in your district, it’s going to be fun. San Saba is a good team, Coach (Andres) Aguirre does a good job over there. We’re familiar with Coleman, and Coach (Jaron) Roberts at Brady has had some success. I’m not that familiar with Johnson City, but they’ve had some success, too. It’s going to be a tough district, but it’ll be fun.”

The Dragons have locked up their pre-district opponents for the next two seasons as Bangs will scrimmage Winters and Miles, while non-district contests will be played against Dublin in Week 1, Haskell in Week 2, Cross Plains in Week 3, Harper in Week 4, and Grape Creek in Week 5.

In basketball, Bangs will compete in Class 2A Region II District 9 along with Cisco, Coleman, Cross Plains, De Leon, Goldthwaite, and San Saba, while in volleyball Bangs is in Class 2A Region I District 5 with Ballinger, Brady, Christoval, Coleman, and Miles.

“We’re all over the place,” Buzzard said with a laugh. “It’s just so different, but I feel like we’re going in the right direction with our programs to make some noise and compete for district titles and playoff wins.”
