BISD Board Report for Jan. 12

The Brownwood ISD (BISD) Board of Trustees met in regular session on Monday, January 12, 2026 at 6:30 p.m. The session was called to order by Board President, Michael Cloy. The invocation was led by BISD Trustee Tim Wilson. Brownwood Middle School (BMS) Theatre Students Lilley Isquirdeo, Christopher Camp, and Riven Perkins led The Pledge of Allegiance

STUDENT PERFORMANCE

The BMS Choir performed “Tunakuja Na Wimbo” by Victor C. Johnson and warm-up piece “Alfred the Alligator” under the direction of choir teacher Jennifer Reeves

INSTRUCTIONAL FOCUS

BISD BOARD OF TRUSTEES – SCHOOL BOARD RECOGNITION MONTH

January is School Board Recognition Month, and BISD joins the Texas Association of School Boards and other districts across the state to honor the countless contributions of these locally elected advocates for Texas schoolchildren and public schools. Students and staff throughout the district put together customized gifts to show their appreciation to each Board member.

RECOGNITIONS

The following groups and individuals were recognized by BISD and were presented with certificates highlighting their achievements.

BISD SPOTLIGHT TEACHERS AND STAFF

The BISD Spotlight recognizes members of the faculty and staff who go the extra mile to ensure excellence in education for all our students. Spotlight recipients are chosen from peer nominations and awards are provided through a sponsorship by Jacobs Family Pharmacy and Brownwood Education Foundation. January 2026 honorees were Brownwood High School (BHS) teacher Guadalupe Vazquez and Woodland Heights Elementary Teacher’s Aide Erin Aguillon. Spotlight recipients are pictured (top with BISD Trustee Diane Thompson and BHS Principal Lindsay Smith, and (bottom) BISD Trustee Tim Wilson, Woodland Heights Elementary Principal Jeanette Lancaster and Assistant Principal Kyra Mills.

6TH GRADE ACADEMIC UIL

Coggin sixth-grade students who placed in the top three in their categories at the Academic UIL competition were recognized. Honorees are pictured below with UIL sponsor Tim Thomas, Coggin Elementary Principal Kassie Parrish, and BISD Trustee Codie Smith.

7TH GRADE ACADEMIC UIL

BMS seventh-grade students who placed in the top three in their categories at the Academic UIL competition were recognized. Honorees are pictured below with BISD Trustee Diane Thompson, BMS Principal Mykia Anderson, and UIL sponsor Tim Thomas.

8TH GRADE ACADEMIC UIL

BMS eighth-grade students who placed in the top three in their categories at the Academic UIL competition were recognized. Honorees are pictured below with BISD Trustee Diane Thompson, BMS Principal Mykia Anderson, and UIL sponsor Tim Thomas.

BMS ONE-ACT PLAY

The BMS One-Act Play cast and crew, directed by Keren Moss, performed “Calabasas Street” and placed 4th overall in competition. Cast and crew who earned individual awards are pictured below with BISD Trustee Tim Thomas, BMS Theatre Director Keren Moss, and BMS Principal Mykia Anderson.

BMS CHOIR

BMS students who were selected for the All-Region Middle School Mixed Choir were recognized. Honorees are pictured below with BISD Trustee Codie Smith, BMS Choir Director Jennifer Reeves, and BMS Principal Mykia Anderson.

BMS BAND

BMS Band students who were selected for the Middle School All-Region Band and earned top places were recognized. Honorees are pictured below with BISD Trustee Codie Smith, BMS Band Director Juan Hernadez, and BMS Principal Mykia Anderson.

EXECUTIVE SESSION

The Board entered executive session at 6:55 p.m. to discuss security and personnel matters including the superintendent contract. The Board exited the executive session at 7:51 p.m. and returned to regular session.

CONSIDER APPROVAL OF 2024-25 FINANCIAL AUDIT

The annual financial audit has been completed. Cameron Aaron from the Pattillo, Brown, and Hill Accounting Firm presented the BISD 2024-2025 audit report to the Board. BISD received a clean opinion from the firm, the highest level of assurance offered. Trustee Smith moved that the audit be approved as presented. Trustee Jones seconded the motion. The motion was unanimously approved.

DISCUSSION & ACTION ITEMS

SUPERINTENDENT REPORT

Dr. Young provided the following updates and information:

• BHS Choir students Kailee Bessent and Bennett Windham qualified to perform in the AllState Choir and will perform on February 14 in San Antonio.

• Tennis coach Dalton Hutchins secured a United States Tennis Association (USTA) grant for $24,500 that will be used for resurfacing the four tennis courts at Brownwood Middle School.

• Team of Eight training for the Board will be held in February

DEPARTMENTAL REPORTS

Enrollment/Transfer Report: The report included a total enrollment of 3455 for the district along with a detailed breakdown of enrollment data by campus. A total of 220 Out-of-District Transfers (into BISD from other districts) were reported as of January 6, 2026.

Quarterly Investment Report: A Quarterly Investment Summary covering September-November 2025 was provided to the Board for review.

CONSIDER APPROVAL OF SUPERINTENDENT’S CONTRACT

Trustee Smith made a motion to extend Dr. Joe Young’s employment contract as Superintendent of Schools (set to expire in 2030) for an additional year as discussed in the Executive Session. The additional year extends the contract through 2031. Trustee Thompson seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.

CONSENT AGENDA

The following items were listed for consideration on the Consent Agenda.

  1. Consider Approval of Fundraisers List
  2. Final Approval of Library Materials for January purchase
  3. Minutes from December 8, 2025 Board Meeting Trustee Jones moved that the Consent Agenda be approved as presented. Trustee Smith seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.

Reminders were announced for the following upcoming events:

• Martin Luther King Jr. Day (School Holiday) – 01/19/2026

• Next Board Meeting – 02/09/2026

The meeting adjourned at 8:10 p.m.
