The HPU Seville, Spain Immersion Program provides students with a month-long cultural experience. Plans are underway for the next trip in the summer of 2026.

This coming summer, Howard Payne University students will have the unique opportunity to study abroad in Seville, Spain for a month-long immersive experience. The program is designed to transform both the academic and personal lives of the students. During the trip, students will live with host families where they will experience Spanish life firsthand, while completing six academic credits of Spanish at the historic University of Seville, that was founded in 1505.

Beyond the classroom, students will embark on enriching excursions to cities of great historical significance such as Córdoba, Granada and Cádiz, each deepening their understanding of Spain’s rich cultural heritage.

Dr. Danny Brunette-López, professor of Spanish and chair of the Department of Spanish, and his wife, Martha, university nurse, serve as sponsors on the month-long trip.

“The HPU Seville Spain Immersion Program is an extraordinary opportunity for students to make a transatlantic voyage to view the world from a different global perspective,” said Dr. Brunette- López. “Being totally immersed in Spanish society, students are challenged to think critically, communicate effectively in another language, and engage deeply with art, literature, music, dance, culture and faith. This rigorous study encourages intellectual growth and personal discipline, reflecting HPU’s commitment to academic and spiritual excellence.”

Immersed in the language and traditions, students’ Spanish proficiency will grow rapidly, while expanding their worldview through the experience of seeing life from a new global perspective. This program not only broadens intellectual horizons but also prepares students for future careers by fostering adaptability, cultural awareness and understanding and global competence.

“By learning Spanish and being totally immersed in the culture, this experience equips students to live out their faith across cultural and linguistic boundaries,” said Dr. Brunette-López. “It also allows them to share the gospel, build relationships, and serve others internationally in Christ’s name more effectively.”

Senior Madelyn Figueroa, elementary education major and Spanish minor from Watauga, participated in the program in the summer of 2024.

“Our trip to Spain was a wonderful experience that helped me get out of my comfort zone and learn from experiences,” said Figueroa. “My favorite parts were going to see flamenco dancing and getting to see the gorgeous views of the country. We visited multiple cities, and they were all so different and so beautiful! The Spanish people were amazing and I’m very glad that I had this unique opportunity to go to Spain.”

HPU’s Seville Spain Immersion Program relies on donations to fully fund their program.  To support this immersive experience with funds to help with travel expenses and other related needs, please visit Howard Payne University – Spain Study Abroad | Howard Payne University and the donation can be completed accordingly. For those interested in joining the program, please contact Dr. Danny Brunette-López at [email protected] or call 325-649-8176.
