
SEGUIN – The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets snapped a two-game skid and picked up an 81-79 road win over Texas Lutheran Sunday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets (6-2), who also defeated Texas Lutheran (2-3) by a 99-90 count in Brownwood back on Nov. 8, broke a tie with 24 seconds left as Ben Phillip recorded a steal and Armonie Ramey was fouled, sinking two free throws that resulted in the final points of the contest with 19 seconds left, as TLU missed a three-pointer at the buzzer.
Howard Payne shot 47 percent (32 of 68) from the floor, knocked down eight three-pointers, and sank 90 percent (9 of 10) of its free throws. Texas Lutheran had a 43 percent (29 of 68) success rate, drained nine treys, but hit just 71 percent (12 of 17) of its free throws.
The Yellow Jackets were outrebounded 43-25, but committed just 16 turnovers to 19 by Texas Lutheran.
Ramey led the Yellow Jackets with 19 points along with 13 each from Phillip and Nathan Scott and 12 points by Trey Jackson. Jordan McClendon chipped in nine followed by seven from Avant Coleman, five from Jamie Puentes and three points from Jackson Tomlin.
TLU’s Semaj Edwards led all scorers with 20 points.
The Yellow Jackets are next slated to visit Tarleton at 7 p.m. Wednesday, then host Dallas Christian at 7 p.m. Friday and Arlington Baptist at 3 p.m. Saturday in the inaugural Dallas Huston Classic.
