Brownwood Police Chief James Fuller fields questions from the City Council Tuesday morning

During Tuesday morning’s meeting, the Brownwood City Council approved a resolution to apply for a grant from the Office of the Governor for bullet-resistant components for Law Enforcement vehicles.

On Oct. 15, the Governor’s office made funding available across the state for “BulletResistant Components for Law Enforcement vehicles”. Authorized by H.B. 2217 and passed during the 89th Regular Session, this funding provides for bullet resistant windshields as well as bullet resistant front windows and front doors.

A grant proposal has been submitted that will outfit 15 of the Department’s marked patrol vehicles with a total expense estimated at approximately $156,000.

Council also approved on first reading an ordinance closing, abandoning and vacating a portion of Milton Avenue, approximately 8,515 square feet, located between Washington Street and Sharp Street, and authorizing the City to sell all right, title and interest in the closed street to Oncor Electric Delivery Company.

Oncor plans to construct a new electrical substation in this location. Since Milton Avenue is a developed street, City policy requires a survey and appraisal of the street and requires the petitioner to pay the fair market value to the City for the closed street. An appraisal of the street was completed on Oct. 23, and the market value was determined to be $17,000. Once the street is closed, the street automatically conveys from the centerline of the street to the adjoining property owners.

Council approved on first reading an ordinance amending the 2024-25 fiscal year City of Brownwood budget for year-end amendments. There are a total of 14 amendments totaling $139,333.

Both the budget amendments and closure of Milton Avenue must come before the Council again at a future meeting for second and third/final reading

Passed on the consent agenda, was an ordinance on second and third/final reading creating a Music Advisory Board.
