I am so excited to announce that I will be running for the position of Brown County Treasurer. As most know, I am retiring after 28 years of teaching a variety of business courses, including Accounting. For the past 25 years I have taught at Brownwood High School, the two years prior at Early High School and my first year was at Brady High School. I have absolutely loved my years in education and have made lifelong friendships; however, I know it is time for a change and a new challenge.
I was born and raised right here in Brownwood. I graduated from Tarleton State University in 1998 with a Business Administration degree and a secondary teaching certificate. I immediately pursued my dream of being a teacher but knew that one day I would ultimately want to use that business degree in a different line of work.
A few attributes that make me the best candidate include:
- Managing groups – I was director of the Brownwood Lionettes for over 15 years. As a director, it was my responsibility to coordinate and plan football season tasks, as well as organize and bring together a Spring Show. I worked alongside the parents to ensure the team had what they needed. It was a collaborative effort. I did this successfully while teaching a full load of business courses each year. During those years, I took these winning teams to perform in Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in 2013 and 2015. In 2014, I took an award-winning group to Florida to perform in the Capital One Bowl halftime performance. All of this was done through hours of coordinating fundraisers and collaborating with the parents and community to ensure these young ladies get to experience this once in a lifetime opportunity.
- Profound dedication to our community – My parents created and founded Brown County Toys for Kids in 1997. I currently hold the office of President over this non-profit organization. My role requires me to always be flexible and ready. To be successful, I assist in managing over 200 volunteers, as well as coordinating fundraising events and taking care of public relations for Toys for Kids. It’s an organization that requires a great deal of time, dedication, sweat, love and tears. Brown County Toys for Kids is a project of love each year that provides gifts for approximately 500 families each Christmas season. My parents instilled in me at an early age that hard work and giving back were the keys to success. I have lived by these words and that has molded me my entire life. I hope that I have instilled those same values in my own children (Nettie – aka Alex & CarolAnn)
- People person – This is a position that requires communication and the ability to work together. My past career has taught me to do just that. There are many duties that fall under the title of Department Head, but the main one is making sure that your people have what they need. As a teacher, there are no two students the same. You must learn to communicate, be flexible, and to adapt to different personality types in order to help them all be the best they can be.
- Own a local family business – My mother owns Grand Starz and we, as a family, take great pride in helping her with this endeavor. I am currently one of the bookkeepers for this company. In this role I have gained over 30 years of experience in managing money, finances, and fundraising. This business also donates a great deal back to our community. We have fundraiser nights at bingo throughout the year to support different groups in our area.
- Dedicated and loyal – My husband, Keith, and I have been married for almost 29 years. We have two beautiful daughters that we raised in this beautiful community. Family is everything to me.
- LEARNER & SELF MOTIVATOR – If elected, I promise to do my best, take advantage of all training opportunities available to me and to excel in this position. I’m not afraid of technology. I love it and I love the challenges the ever changing technology brings to our world. I can assure you that I will never back down from a challenge.
So, with this said, please remember me as you go to the polls in March. I am ready to be your next Brown County Treasurer.
