WEEK 9 GRIDIRON GLIMPSE: Blanket, Zephyr target title in 13-A Division II showdown

Zephyr (6-1, 1-0) at Blanket (7-1, 2-0)

7:30 p.m. Friday

In a game that will likely determine the District 13-A Division II championship, Brown County rivals Blanket and Zephyr cross paths once again Friday night.

Blanket has opened league play with victories over Gustine (57-12) and Rising Star (52-6), while Zephyr also knocked off Rising Star (53-8) and had its district bye last week.

In the Tigers’ win over Rising Star last week, Blanket rushed for 279 of its 308 yards of total offense.

Kannon Kensing led the charge with 188 rushing yards and five touchdowns while Mason Beck tacked on 91 yards on the ground and reached the end zone once.

Through the air, Leo Valdez tossed a 2-yard touchdown to Brian Shannon, while Beck hurled a 25-yard completion to Kensing.

Defensively for the Tigers, Beck and Kensing each recorded eight tackles followed by Shannon with five tackles and an interception, Abel McLaughlin with four tackles, Karter Keel with three, Brayden Cain with two, Cole Furry with one tackle, and Alex Valdez blocked a kick.

In Zephyr’s win over Rising Star, the Bulldogs allowed a total of -5 yards of offense – 2 through the air and -7 on the ground – with a pair of takeaways.

Offensively, the Bulldogs compiled 279 yards – 190 rushing and 89 passing – with one turnover.

Chayden Woodcock fueled the rushing attack with 115 yards and five touchdowns while Quayde Heard chipped in 47 yards on the ground and CJ Byers ran for 36 yards.

Heard also completed 5 of 10 passes for 89 yards with a 17-yard touchdown to Byers.

Bauer Blair added a 28-yard reception, Woodcock caught a 21-yard pass and Jetson Gowin finished with a team-high two grabs for 23 yards.

Defensively, Byers and Troy Kubin led Zephyr with six tackles each, while Byers also recovered a fumble and Woodcock intercepted a pass.

According to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, the Bulldogs are a 10-point favorite, while sixmanfootball.com lists Zephyr as a 15-point favorite.

May (6-1, 0-0) at Santa Anna (3-4, 0-0)

7:30 p.m. Friday

The Class A Division I No. 3 May Tigers turn their focus toward a potential district championship as they open league play against the Santa Anna Mountaineers.

Coming off a bye last week, May’s most recent outing was a 60-0 home triumph over Rocksprings.

The Tigers scored three times on defense as Jackson Lusk returned an interception 16 yards for a touchdown and also had a scoop and score following a fumble recovery, while Kobey Morris chipped in a 42-yard pick six.

Offensively, Lane Goodson rushed for 59 yards and a touchdown, Mikey Scheriger contributed 36 yards on the ground and scored once, Kobey Morris added 25 rushing yards with a trip to the end zone, and Lusk picked up 23 yards on the ground and crossed the goal line once. Kayden Psencik also tacked on 29 rushing yards.

Scheriger led May with six tackles followed by five from Goodson, four each from Morris, Lusk and Psencik, and two tackles apiece by Britton Morrow and JD Harrell.

Santa Anna, also coming off a bye, won its most recent contest as well, outlasting Woodson, 28-20, in double overtime.

The Mountaineers finished with 361 yards of total offense – 196 rushing and 165 passing.

Brock Brown completed 7 of 17 passes for 165 yards with touchdowns of 4 and 58 yards to Jeremiah Davila, who finished with five catches for 123 yards. Kain Watson added a 30-yard reception and Eddie York grabbed a 12-yard pass.

On the ground, Jayden Gibson rushed for 136 yards while Jordan Diggs finished with 30 yards and a 2-yard score and Watson chipped in 22 yards and a 9-yard touchdown.

Defensively, Brown led Santa Anna with 21 tackles followed by nine from Davila, eight from Watson, seven from Tony Blaine, five from Diggs, and three from Gibson. Davila also picked off two passes and Watson and Blaine each recovered a fumble.

According to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, the Tigers are a 45-point favorite, while sixmanfootball.com lists May as a 45-point favorite.

Brookesmith (3-5, 0-2) at Rochelle (2-5, 1-0)

7:30 p.m. Friday

The Brookesmith Mustangs will attempt to land in the win column for the first time in District 15-A Division II action Friday night, and hand the Rochelle Hornets their first league setback in the process.

Brookesmith has fallen to Richland Springs (69-0) and Panther Creek (73-28) in district action, as the last victory for the Mustangs was Oct. 3 when they rallied from an eight-point halftime deficit for a 54-44 road win over Olfen.

In that game, Brookesmith rushed for 267 yards behind Addy Heard’s 214-yard, four-touchdown effort. Jase Julien chipped in three receptions for 45 yards and a touchdown, along with 34 rushing yards and two more scores. Austin Loyd passed for 45 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 15 yards, and Blake Loyd scored on a 2-yard carry.

Defensively for Brookesmith, Aryn Ribble registered six tackles trailed by five each from Heard and Robert Eachus, four from Julien, and three each from Austin Loyd and Travis Jarvis.

Rochelle opened the season with five straight losses but has since won two in a row, including its district opener against Lohn (61-7) last week.

The Hornets return eight of 16 lettermen and three starters on each side of the ball from a 5-5 playoff team a year ago.

Players to watch include Jayce McCormick, Xavier Mendez, Chris Lopez, Gavin Rodriguez and Coltyn Sohns.

Breckenridge (2-5, 0-2) at Comanche (3-4, 0-2)

7 p.m. Friday

The Comanche Indians will attempt to jump back into the playoff picture in District 3-3A Division I, but the Breckenridge Buckaroos have similar intentions as the two teams square off Friday.

After falling to Jim Ned (56-3) in the league opener, Comanche also came up short against Sweetwater (55-14) last week.

The Indians mustered just 184 yards of total offense – 137 passing and 57 rushing – in their most recent outing, with a pair of turnovers.

Cooper Welch completed 13 of 28 passes for 137 yards with two touchdowns and a pair of interceptions. CT Buford grabbed 10 receptions for 93 yards and scored once, while Adrian Reyes added two catches for 44 yards and also reached the end zone.

On the ground, Nick Anaya rushed for 23 yards for Comanche followed by Zaden Tello with 18 and Elijah Ozuna with 12 yards.

Defensively for the Indians, Damian Aguilar led the team with 11 tackles and a fumble recovery followed by Brady Gaines with nine tackles, Tello with eight, Carlos Orozco with six, and Reyes finished with five tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery.

Breckenridge has started district with losses to Clyde (22-14) and Jim Ned (49-7).

Standouts for the Buckaroos include quarterback Joseph Juneau (459 passing yards, 5 TDs, 6 INTs; 120 rushing yards, 1 TD), running back Jaime Cruz (512 rushing yards, 5 TDs), and receivers Ryan Waller (26-412, 4 TDs) and Erik Saucedo (10-98, 1 TD).

According to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, the Indians are a 17-point favorite, while Harris Ratings Weekly lists Comanche as a 10-point underdog.

Hico (4-3, 0-2) at Coleman (1-6, 0-2)

7 p.m. Friday

In a quest to keep their playoff hopes alive, the Coleman Bluecats host the District 5-2A Division I rival Hico Tigers as both teams are in need of their first league victory.

Coleman is coming off a 58-0 loss to De Leon where the Bluecats mustered just 115 yards of total offense – 83 rushing and 32 passing – with four turnovers, while surrendering 416 yards – 245 through the air and 171 on the ground – without a takeaways.

Paul Salas rushed for 80 yards for the Bluecats, while Hunter Edington completed 6 of 12 passes for 32 yards. Brayden Torres caught two passes for 11 yards, Jayden Smith added two receptions for 6 yards, Kyle Chambers caught a 8-yard pass, and Salas hauled in a 7-yard reception.

Defensively, Coleman received 15 tackles from Bryson Story, 10 from Darren Hurtado, eight from Brady Elder, and six tackles from Jett Black.

Cole Heutzenroeder rushed for 132 yards and two touchdowns, while Gage Norris added 66 yards on the ground and threw a 34-yard touchdown pass. Tyler Jackson passed for 113 yards with a scoring toss to Heutzenroeder from 33 yards out.

According to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, the Bluecats are a 26-point favorite, while Harris Ratings Weekly lists the game as a toss up.

San Saba (4-3, 1-1) at Harper (4-3, 1-1)

7 p.m. Friday

The San Saba Armadillos look to bounce back from their first District 14-2A Division I loss as they visit the Harper Longhorns in a pivotal league contest.

San Saba’s three-game win streak was halted by Thorndale, 28-24, last week as the Armadillos rushed for 359 of their 361 yards of total offense.

Luke Tharp compiled 202 yards and two touchdowns and caught a 2-yard pass from JJ Romero. Jason Everett contributed 144 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

Defensively for the Armadillos, Melvin Umble recorded nine tackles trailed by Danny English with seven, and Juan Patino with six. San Saba did not record a takeaway.

Harper was also handed its first league setback last week by Mason, 54-7.

The Longhorns are led by quarterback Braydon Lake, running backs Jace Helfrich and Justin Wilke, and receivers Jaylon Wilson, William Spaeth and Tate Garrett.

According to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, the Armadillos are a 32-point favorite, while Harris Ratings Weekly lists San Saba as a 34-point favorite.

Albany (5-2, 2-0) at Cross Plains (3-4, 1-1)

7 p.m. Thursday

Due to the possibility of inclement weather Friday night, Cross Plains’ home District 7-2A Division II contest against Albany has been moved to Thursday night.

The Cross Buffaloes are coming off their first district victory, a 38-14 road triumph over Miles.

Cross Plains amassed 365 yards of total offense – 304 rushing and 61 passing – with one turnover, while allowing 217 yards – 130 on the ground and 87 through the air – with three takeaways.

Kye Schuman rushed for 182 yards and a pair of touchdowns for the Buffaloes, while Tyler Mackey tacked on 92 yards and also reached the end zone twice.

Landry Savell completed 4 of 8 passes for 61 yards with a touchdown and an interception, as Rylen Reed caught two passes for 39 yards and Mackey grabbed two receptions for 22 yards and crossed the goal line once.

Defensively, Schuman logged 12 tackles followed by Anson Long with nine, Jesse Bradford with eight tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery, and Brandan Jones returned an interception 40 yards for a touchdown to cap the scoring.

Albany, which has defeated Miles (48-0) and Winters (54-0) in its first two league outings, is led by quarterbacks Clay Chapman (444 passing yards, 5 TDs, 1 INT) and Lyle Wheeler (228 passing yards, 4 TDs, 3 INTs), running backs Breylon Billington (416 yards, 10 TDs) and Shawn Keen (330 yards, 3 TDs), and receivers Jaxson Street (18-236, 3 TDs), Huffman Heatly (15-197, TD) and Calhan Fairchild (15-193, 5 TDs).

According to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, the Buffaloes are a 37-point underdog, while Harris Ratings Weekly lists Cross Plains as a 45-point underdog.

Goldthwaite (4-3, 2-2) at Wortham (1-6, 1-3)

7 p.m. Friday

The Goldthwaite Eagles look to rebound from their second loss to a state-ranked District 10-2A Division II foe as they venture to Wortham to battle the Bulldogs.

In a 47-0 loss at home to No. 3 Bremond last week, Goldthwaite was limited to 133 yards of total offense – 89 rushing and 44 passing – with five turnovers, while surrendering 371 yards – 191 on the ground and 180 through the air – without a takeaway.

Landry Sanderson rushed for 78 yards for the Eagles while Owen Campbell added 15 on the ground. Blake Howard completed 6 of 15 passes for 44 yards with four interceptions. Aidyn Lee caught four passes for 33 yards, while Talen Gardner added a 7-yard catch and Casen Wiedebusch tacked on a 4-yard reception, to go along with 8 rushing yards.

Wortham picked up its first win of the season last week against Meridian (36-0) as the Bulldogs return just one offensive and three defensive starters from an 8-4 playoff team in 2024.

Players to watch include running back/linebacker Evan McCoslin, linebacker Carlos Godinez and the two-way starter back from 2024, lineman Nathan Chasteen.

According to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, the Eagles are a 50-point favorite, while Harris Ratings Weekly lists Goldthwaite as a 42-point favorite.

Panther Creek (5-3, 2-0) at Richland Springs (6-1, 1-0)

7:30 p.m. Friday

The Class A Division II No. 3 Richland Springs Coyotes host the Panther Creek Panthers in a battle of teams yet to lose a game on their District 15 schedule..

Richland Springs blanked Brookesmith, 69-0, in its league opener two weeks, while Panther Creek has also knocked off Brookesmith, 73-28, as well as Lohn, 49-7.

In the Coyotes’ win over Brookesmith, their most recent outing, Richland Springs manufactured 239 total yards – 170 rushing and 69 passing. Billy Perry rushed for 58 yards and two touchdowns and passed for 31 yards and another score, while Cohen Ethridge threw a 33-yard touchdown pass and caught a 9-yard touchdown pass.

Evan Deeds added a 45-yard touchdown on the ground and passed for a 5-yard score, while Ethan Deeds rushed for a 15-yard touchdown and caught a 5-yard score.

Layne Ward contributed a 33-yard scoring reception and rushed for 17 yards while Brice Roesler ran for a 7-yard touchdown and caught a 24-yard pass. Trenton Vogel finished with 28 yards on the ground, and Dalton Moats hauled in a 28-yard reception.

Panther Creek is coming off a 73-28 triumph over Brookesmith this past Friday as the Panthers compiled 378 total yards – 202 passing and 176 rushing.

Caleb Hale completed 9 of 11 passes for 202 yards with three touchdowns as Adan Wyatt finished with four catches for 154 yards and two trips to the end zone, while Caleb Storey hauled in three receptions for 24 yards and scored once.

On the ground, Wyatt rushed for 86 yards with three more touchdowns, while Storey tacked on 39 rushing yards and scored twice.

Storey led the Panthers with 15 tackles followed by Wyatt with nine, Trever Brooks with eight, Aidan Patterson with five and a fumble recovery, and Hale returned a fumble 44 yards for a Panther Creek touchdown.

According to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, the Coyotes are a 45-point favorite, while sixmanfootball.com also lists Richland Springs as a 45-point favorite.

Rising Star (4-4, 0-2) at Sidney (2-5, 0-1)

7:30 p.m. Thursday

In other game pushed up a day due to the threat of inclement weather, two teams seeking their first District 13-A Division II victory of the season clash as the Rising Star Wildcats visit the Sidney Eagles.

Rising Star has started league play with losses to Zephyr (53-8) and Blanket (52-6). Meanwhile, Sidney dropped its league opener to Gustine (64-34) last week.

In Rising Star’s game against Blanket last week, Chance Wells rushed for 52 yards and a touchdown, passed for 11 yard and caught a 7-yard pass. Anthony Pollard passed for 45 yards as JV Kelly grabbed three receptions for 15 yards and Leland Schenk caught a 12-yard pass.

Defensively, Wells and Pollard each tallied five tackles while Schenk added four, Kason McGinn finished with three, and Brayan Lopez was credited with a pair of tackles.

In Sidney’s loss to Gustine last week, Ethan Scantling passed for 100 yards and two touchdowns, rushed for 90 yards and caught a 1-yard touchdown, while Rees Miller rushed for 70 yards and a score, threw for 43 yards and another touchdown, and grabbed three receptions for 45 yards. Josh Heath chipped in three catches for 78 yards and crossed the goal line twice, while passing for 2 yards and another touchdown. Daylan Gilbert added a 20-yard scoring reception as well.

Defensively for the Eagles, Miller recorded 15 tackles along with 12 tackles and an interception from Scantling, 10 tackles and a fumble recovery from Gilbert, eight tackles from Dylan Terpstra, and four each tackles from Heath and Lucas Wilson.

According to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, the Wildcats are a 2-point favorite, while sixmanfootball.com lists Rising Star as a 10-point favorite.

Oglesby (6-1, 2-0) at Priddy (1-6, 0-1)

7 p.m. Thursday

In a game moved to Thursday due a lack of officials, the Priddy Pirates are in the role of spoiler as they host District 14-A Division II favorite Oglesby.

The Pirates are coming off 54-0 loss to Cranfills Gap in last week’s league opener, as Priddy’s lone win this season came against the Rocksprings JV (38-28).

Pirates to keep an eye on include Shane Ahearn, Brailen Rea and Luis Reyes.

Oglesby, whose only loss this year came to Coolidge (59-58), is led by Holdyn Goff (1,211 rushing yards, 26 TDs; 463 passing yards, 4 TDs; Jack Hendricks (9-239, 4 TDs receiving) and Callan Webb (232 rushing yards, 5 TDs).

According to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, the Pirates are a 45-point underdog, while sixmanfootball.com also lists the Pirates as a 45-point underdogs.
