Jewel Smick, age 93 passed away peacefully on Friday, September 26, 2025 in Rising Star, Texas. Her family and friends will host a Memorial Service at 10:00 am on Saturday, October 25, 2025 at the First Baptist Church in Rising Star.

Jewell was born on December 1, 1931 to Elbert and Eulene Shadrick in Evarts, Kentucky. She attended school at Red Bird Elementary until the 6th grade. In May of 1971, Jewell married John Smick in San Diego, California.

Jewell (aka) Sister was a true coal miner’s daughter. Sister and Norma Sue grew up in Harlan Co, KY. Their parents and grandparents were all coal miners. The Blue Diamond Coal Co. was kind of their home, school, store and playground. Family was told when she left Harlan County, part of her was left there at Blue Diamond.

Sister was a true believer in church from early in life until of late, she could be found in Bible Study. She was very active in helping with church bake sales, and in the church kitchen for anything that was needed of her. Sister loved God and her church family.

Left to cherish her memory are her nephews, William K. Walker of Koroni, Greece, Joseph E. Walker of Rising Star, TX; brother-in-law Rudy P. Gutierrez of Rising Star, TX; grandson Carl Wylie and Deon Potts of Detroit, MI; granddaughter Selena Potts of Detroit, MI; 4 great-grandchildren; a host of friends and church family.

She was preceded in death by her husband John Smick, son William Parsons, daughter Donna Parsons, parents Elbert and Eileen Sharick and sister Norma Sue Gutierrez, 2 nieces, Rebecca Walker and Sue Ellen Walker.
