WEEK 8 GRIDIRON REWIND: Blanket, Cross Plains, Panther Creek secure district wins

Blanket 52, Rising Star 6

RISING STAR – The Blanket Tigers notched their seventh straight victory and remained undefeated against District 13-A Division II competition with a 52-6 triumph at Rising Star Friday night.

Blanket (7-1, 2-0) rushed for 279 of its 308 yards of total offense against Rising Star (4-4, 0-2).

Kannon Kensing led the charge with 188 rushing yards and five touchdowns while Mason Beck tacked on 91 yards on the ground and reached the end zone once.

Through the air, Leo Valdez tossed a 2-yard touchdown to Brian Shannon, while Beck hurled a 25-yard completion to Kensing.

Defensively for the Tigers, Beck and Kensing each recorded eight tackles followed by Shannon with five tackles and an interception, Abel McLaughlin with four tackles, Karter Keel with three, Brayden Cain with two, Cole Furry with one tackle, and Alex Valdez blocked a kick.

Stats for the Wildcats were not available.

Next week, Blanket hosts Zephyr (6-1, 1-0), which had a bye Friday night, for sole possession of first place in the district standings. Rising Star will head to Sidney (2-5, 0-1), which dropped its league opener to Gustine (5-2, 1-1) by a 64-34 count Friday night.

Cross Plains 38, Miles 14

MILES – The Cross Plains Buffaloes secured their first District 7-2A Division II victory of the season Friday night with a 38-14 road win over the Miles Bulldogs.

Cross Plains (3-4, 1-1) amassed 365 yards of total offense – 304 rushing and 61 passing – with one turnover, while Miles (1-6, 0-2) finished with 217 yards – 130 on the ground and 87 through the air – with three turnovers.

Kye Schuman rushed for 182 yards and a pair of touchdowns for the Buffaloes, while Tyler Mackey tacked on 92 yards and also reached the end zone twice.

Landry Savell completed 4 of 8 passes for 61 yards with a touchdown and an interception, as Rylen Reed caught two passes for 39 yards and Mackey grabbed two receptions for 22 yards and crossed the goal line once.

Defensively, Schuman logged 12 tackles followed by Anson Long with nine, Jesse Bradford with eight tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery, and Brandan Jones returned an interception 40 yards for a touchdown to cap the scoring.

Next week, Cross Plains hosts Albany (5-2, 2-0), which earned a 54-0 victory over Winters (2-5, 0-2) Friday night.

Panther Creek 73, Brookesmith 28

BROOKESMITH – The Brookesmith Mustangs were denied their first District 15-A Division II victory of the season as the Panther Creek Panthers remained undefeated in league play, 73-28, Friday night.

Panther Creek (5-3, 2-0) manufactured 378 total yards – 202 passing and 176 rushing – against the Brookesmith (3-5, 0-2) defense.

Caleb Hale completed 9 of 11 passes for 202 yards with three touchdowns as Adan Wyatt finished with four catches for 154 yards and two trips to the end zone, while Caleb Storey hauled in three receptions for 24 yards and scored once.

On the ground, Wyatt rushed for 86 yards with three more touchdowns, while Storey tacked on 39 rushing yards and scored twice.

Storey led the Panthers with 15 tackles followed by Wyatt with nine, Trever Brooks with eight, Aidan Patterson with five and a fumble recovery, and Hale returned a fumble 44 yards for a Panther Creek touchdown.

Stats for Brookesmith were not available.

Next week, Brookesmith heads to Rochelle (2-5, 1-0), which is coming off a 61-7 victory over Lohn (3-5, 0-2), while Panther Creek welcomes No. 3 Richland Springs (6-1, 1-0), which did not play this week.

Thorndale 28, San Saba 24

SAN SABA – The San Saba Armadillos were handed their first District 14-A Division I loss, 28-24 by the Thorndale Bulldogs, who notched their first league victory Friday night.

San Saba (4-3, 1-1) rushed for 359 of its 361 yards as Luke Tharp compiled 202 yards and two touchdowns and caught a 2-yard pass from JJ Romero. Jason Everett contributed 144 yards and a touchdown on the ground against Thorndale (4-3, 1-1).

Defensively for the Armadillos, Melvin Umble recorded nine tackles trailed by Danny English with seven, and Juan Patino with six. San Saba did not record a takeaway.

Next week, San Saba visits Harper (4-3, 1-1), which is coming off a 54-7 loss to Mason (4-3, 2-0).

Sweetwater 55, Comanche 14

SWEETWATER – The Comanche Indians dropped their second straight District 3-3A Division I contest to the Sweetwater Mustangs, 55-14, Friday night.

Comanche (3-4, 0-2) mustered just 184 yards of total offense – 137 passing and 57 rushing – against Sweetwater (3-4, 2-0), with a pair of turnovers.

Cooper Welch completed 13 of 28 passes for 137 yards with two touchdowns and a pair of interceptions. CT Buford grabbed 10 receptions for 93 yards and scored once, while Adrian Reyes added two catches for 44 yards and also reached the end zone.

On the ground, Nick Anaya rushed for 23 yards for Comanche followed by Zaden Tello with 18 and Elijah Ozuna with 12 yards.

Defensively for the Indians, Damian Aguilar led the team with 11 tackles and a fumble recovery followed by Brady Gaines with nine tackles, Tello with eight, Carlos Orozco with six, and Reyes finished with five tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery.

Next week, Comanche hosts Breckenridge (2-5, 0-2), which lost to Jim Ned (6-1, 2-0) by a 49-7 count Friday.

Bremond 47, Goldthwaite 0

GOLDTHWAITE – The Goldthwaite Eagles were unable to hand the Class 2A Division II No. 3 Bremond Tigers their first loss of the season in a 47-0 District 10-2A Division II decision Friday night.

Goldthwaite (4-3, 2-2) was limited to 133 yards of total offense – 89 rushing and 44 passing – with five turnovers, while Bremond (7-0, 4-0) generated 371 yards – 191 on the ground and 180 through the air – and did not turn over the ball.

Landry Sanderson rushed for 78 yards for the Eagles while Owen Campbell added 15 on the ground. Blake Howard completed 6 of 15 passes for 44 yards with four interceptions. Aidyn Lee caught four passes for 33 yards, while Talen Gardner added a 7-yard catch and Casen Wiedebusch tacked on a 4-yard reception, to go along with 8 rushing yards.

Next week, Goldthwaite heads to Wortham (1-6, 1-3), which picked up its first win of the season over Meridian (1-6, 1-3) by a 36-0 count Friday night.

De Leon 58, Coleman 0

DE LEON – The Coleman Bluecats suffered a sixth straight setback and remained winless in District 5-2A Division I action, while the De Leon Bearcats kept their league record unblemished in a 58-0 decision Friday night.

Coleman (1-6, 0-2) finished with 115 yards of total offense – 83 rushing and 32 passing – with four turnovers, while De Leon (5-2, 2-0) produced 416 yards – 245 through the air and 171 on the ground – without a turnover.

Paul Salas rushed for 80 yards for the Bluecats, while Hunter Edington completed 6 of 12 passes for 32 yards. Brayden Torres caught two passes for 11 yards, Jayden Smith added two receptions for 6 yards, Kyle Chambers caught a 8-yard pass, and Salas hauled in a 7-yard reception.

Defensively, Coleman received 15 tackles from Bryson Story, 10 from Darren Hurtado, eight from Brady Elder, and six tackles from Jett Black.

Next week, Coleman hosts Hico (4-3, 0-2), which is coming off a 28-27 loss to Bangs (5-2, 2-0) Friday night.
