
Rising Star (4-2, 0-0) at Zephyr (5-1, 0-0)

The Zephyr Bulldogs’ attempt to earn a fourth consecutive district championship begins Friday night when they host the Rising Star Wildcats in the 13-A Division II opener for both squads.
Zephyr rebounded from its only loss of the season with a 56-6 win over Santa Anna in last week’s pre-district finale. The Bulldogs compiled 379 yards of total offense behind a balanced attack of 196 rushing yards and 183 passing yards.
Chayden Woodcock rushed for 76 yards and three touchdowns, Jetson Gowin added 54 rushing yards and a touchdown, and CJ Byers contributed 52 yards on the ground and a trip to the end zone.
Quayde Heard passed for 123 yards and a touchdown and Ethan Prochaska added a 36-yard scoring strike. Gowin caught a 60-yard touchdown pass, Reid Hamm finished with two catches for 56 yards and scored once, Woodcock added two grabs for 36 yards, and Wyatt Frank hauled in a 24-yard reception.
Defensively, Byers tallied a team-best six tackles followed by Gowin, Woodcock and Bauer Blair with five each, and Prochaska and Troy Kubin with four tackles apiece.
Rising Star logged a forfeit victory over Priddy last week, but the week prior the Wildcats snapped a two-game skid with a 46-36 homecoming win over Gorman.
In that contest, standouts for Rising Star were JV Kelly with 213 rushing yards and four touchdowns to go along with 99 passing yards and another score, and three catches for 44 yards. Chance Wells added 78 yards and a touchdown on the ground and 74 yards through the air. Leland Schenk caught three passes for 46 yards, Juakeen Froese added three catches for 29 yards with a touchdown, Kason McGinn grabbed three receptions for 24 yards, and Pacey McGinn pulled down a 35-yard reception.
Leading the way defensively for the Wildcats were Kelly with 14 tackles, a fumble recovery and an 80-yard interception return for a touchdown. Wells also finished with 14 tackles, Schenk and Kasen McGinn contributed 13 tackles each, Frose added seven tackles and picked off a pass, while Kaiden Griffith tallied four tackles, Richie Primm notched three tackles and Bryan Lopez recorded one tackle.

Gustine (4-1, 0-0) at Blanket (5-1, 0-0)
7:30 p.m. Friday
After making a return to the playoffs last year after a one-year absence, the Blanket Tigers are looking to compete for the District 13-A Division II championship, and the Gustine Tigers are the first test.
Blanket is in the midst of a five-game win streak with its most recent triumph coming last week at the hands of Woodson, 56-8.
Blanket generated 316 yards of total offense – 168 rushing and 148 passing – as Kannon Kensing rushed for 89 yards and two touchdowns, caught a 27-yard touchdown pass from Mason Beck, and threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Beck, who also rushed for 41 yards and a score and passed for 56 yards. Leo Valdez threw a 67-yard touchdown to Brian Shannon, Alex Valdez added a 38-yard rushing score, and Cole Furry caught a 29-yard pass.
Defensively, Brayden Cain tallied nine tackles and an interception, Abel McLaughlin notched eight tackles, Beck finished with six tackles and an interception, Karter Keel logged six tackles with a fumble recovery, and Kade Russell chipped in five tackles.
Gustine’s lone blemish came against Three Way (44-8) with victories over Paint Creek (68-20), Buckholts (56-8), Priddy (48-0), and Morgan (54-8).
Players to watch for Gustine include Andy Garcia, Anthony Patino, Alonso Gomez, Alan Mejia, and Michael Garcia.

Brookesmith (3-3, 0-0) at Richland Springs (4-1, 0-0)

The Brookesmith Mustangs will attempt to derail the Class A Division II No. 3 Richland Springs Coyotes, who are seeking a 23rd district championship in 24 years as 15-A Division II action begins for both squads.
Brookesmith rallied for a 54-44 victory at Olfen last week as the Mustangs rushed for 267 yards behind Addy Heard’s 214-yard, four-touchdown effort. Jase Julien chipped in three receptions for 45 yards and a touchdown, along with 34 rushing yards and two more scores. Austin Loyd passed for 45 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 15 yards, and Blake Loyd scored on a 2-yard carry.
Defensively for Brookesmith, Aryn Ribble registered six tackles trailed by five each from Heard and Robert Eachus, four from Julien, and three each from Austin Loyd and Travis Jarvis
Richland Springs is coming off a 59-14 victory over Lometa as the Coyotes finished the night with 328 yards – 170 rushing and 158 passing.
Cohen Ethridge rushed for 121 yards and a touchdown, passed for 31 yards and another score, and grabbed three receptions for 23 yards and scored once. Billy Perry threw for 90 yards and three touchdowns and chipped in 26 yards rushing, while Ethan Deeds passed for 37 yards and a touchdown, rushed for 23 yards with a touchdown, and caught a 19-yard scoring toss.
Evan Deeds added a team-high five catches for 64 yards with a touchdown and Eli Hutchins pulled down a 25-yard pass.

Rocksprings (3-3) at May (5-1)

The Class A Division I No. 3 May Tigers eye a fifth win in a row in their pre-district finale as they welcome the Rocksprings Angoras.
The Tigers chalked up a 60-12 victory at Irion County last week as leading the charge offensively for May was Lane Goodson with 125 rushing yards and three touchdowns and 118 passing yards and three more scores. Jackson Lusk added 41 yards on the ground and a touchdown and finished with 54 receiving yards and another score. Kaden Watkins amassed 66 yards receiving and a touchdown, Kobey Morris finished with 20 receiving yards and reached the end zone once, Mikey Scheriger rushed for 18 yards and a touchdown, and Cayson Dail contributed 22 receiving yards.
Defensively for the Tigers, Goodson logged six tackles followed by five from Kayden Psencik, four from Lusk, three tackles and an interception from Scheriger, three tackles from Morris, and two tackles apiece from Watkins and Britton Morrow.
Rocksprings has defeated Sanderson (60-12), Santa Anna (65-20) and Midland TLCA (67-7), with losses at the hands of Menard (68-6), Rankin (58-12), and Leakey.
Rocksprings High School has an enrollment of just 65 students, 40 below the six-man line as the school district opted to make the move ahead of the 2025 season. Rocksprings last had an 11-man enrollment number during the 2008-09 school year, which was 122 students at the time.

In a meeting of two of last year’s three District 3-3A Division I tri-champions, the Comanche Indians look to upset the No. 7 Jim Ned Indians in the league opener for a second year in a row.
Comanche carries a three-game win streak into the district opener, with its most recent triumph being a 34-7 decision at Early.
The Indians generated 359 total yards – 230 rushing and 129 passing – as Ladanian Smith rushed for 141 yards and three touchdowns while Zayden Tello contributed 89 yards on the ground and reached the end zone twice.
Through the air, Cooper Welch completed 10 of 15 passes for 129 yards, with nine going to CT Buford who finished with 102 receiving yards. Adrian Reyes added a 27-yard reception for the Indians.
Defensively, Comanche allowed just 194 yards of total offense and forced a turnover.
The lone loss for Jim Ned cam to Wall, 24-0, with victories over Lubbock Estacado (42-21), Cedar Hill TLC (23-22), Jacksboro (23-13), and Holliday (48-20).
Players to watch include quarterback Cash Gwinn (713 passing yards, 7 TDs; 199 rushing yards, 1 TD), running back Stone Griffon (217 rushing yards, 3 TDs), and receivers Breck Lawson (21-318, 3 TDs) and Gavin Brooks (7-173, 3 TDs).

The Coleman Bluecats will attempt to bring their four-game skid to a halt as they host the reigning District 5-2A Division I champion Hamilton Bulldogs.
The most recent outing for Coleman was a 44-20 loss to Class 2A Division II No. 10 Collinsville, as the Bluecats finished with 249 yards of total offense – 185 through the air and 64 on the ground.
Hunter Edington passed for 185 yards with three touchdowns and one interception, while Paul Salas caught three passes for 28 yards with two trips to the end zone, Micah Lackey led all Bluecats with six grabs for 124 yards and a touchdown, Kyle Chambers added five catches for 13 yards, and Jayden Smith pulled down three receptions for 10 yards. On the ground, Salas rushed for 41 yards, Chambers added 14 and Edington tacked on 4 yards.
Defensively, the Bluecats were led by Easton Meador’s 10 tackles, with one for loss; nine tackles each from Lackey and Brady Elder; seven apiece from Gio Villanueva and Jett Black; and six each from Chambers and Lane Bowers.
Hamilton has picked up wins over Millsap (35-6), Early (34-0), and Clifton (42-7) with losses to Crawford (14-12) and San Saba (17-14).
Bulldogs to watch include linebacker/running back Halston Haile, quarterback/defensive back Carson Roberts, and receiver/defensive back Devin Eanes, linebacker Bret Bauman, and running backs Cooper Turner and Brent Schenk.

The San Saba Armadillos look to notch a third consecutive victory as they welcome the Johnson City Eagles in the District 14-2A Division I opener Friday night,
The Armadillos pulled off a 17-14 upset of Hamilton in their last outing as San Saba manufactured 242 yards of total offense, with 220 coming on the ground, as Luke Tharp finished with 104 yards and a touchdown and Jason Everett chipped in 101 rushing yards.
JJ Romero completed 4 of 6 passes for 22 yards with Danny English pulling down a 14-yard catch, Tharp adding a 7-yard reception, and Graden Lebow nabbing two receptions totaling 1 yard.
Defensively, Luke Tharp returned a fumble 50 yards for a touchdown and also tallied nine tackles. Everett and Kolton Pierce joined Tharp with nine tackles as well, followed by Kaylub Roberts with eight, and English and Melvin Umble with six apiece. Jayden Aguirre also recovered a fumble for San Saba, and logged five tackles.
Johnson City has collected victories against Sonora (22-12), Miles (49-6), and Thrall (41-18), while coming up short against Granger (49-34) and Comfort (49-35).
Eagles to keep an eye on include quarterback Wyatt Lorenzen (710 passing yards, 9 TDs; 265 rushing yards, 8 TDs), running backs Cody Spence (470 rushing yards, 5 TDs), and Heston Hohenberger (262 rushing yards, 1 TD), and receiver Brady Odiorn (20-347, 4 TDs).

Goldthwaite (3-2, 1-1) at Frost (5-0, 2-0)

The Goldthwaite Eagles notched their first District 10-2A Division II victory of the season last week, and now look to hand the Frost Polar Bears their initial defeat of the 2025 campaign.
In a 65-0 victory over Hubbard, Goldthwaite amassed 424 yards of total offense – 213 through the air and 211 on the ground – with one turnover, while limiting Hubbard (2-3, 0-2) to 40 yards – 28 on the ground and 12 through the air – with three takeaways.
The Eagles were sparked by Blake Howard’s 213 passing yards and four touchdowns as Slade Allen caught five passes for 89 yards with a touchdown, Zach Rodriguez hauled in a 55-yard scoring toss, and Talen Gardner grabbed two touchdowns among his three catches for 30 yards. Casen Wiedebusch recorded two receptions for 39 yards as well.
On the ground, Landry Sanderson rushed for 115 yards and a touchdown, Hayes Greenway found the end zone twice and ran for 47 yards, and Owen Campbell chipped in 26 yards.
Frost has started its campaign with victories over Winters (45-21), Itasca (28-14), the China Spring Cen Tex Sports Association (68-20), Wortham (24-0) and Meridian (38-14).
Last week against Meridian, Polar Bear quarterback Edwin Alvarado completed 13 of 22 passes for 280 yards and four touchdowns, while rushing for 60 yards and another score, and tallying a team-high 11 tackles on defense.
Fabian Abundis caught seven passes for 130 yards with a touchdown and JC Woods added four grabs for 118 yards and crossed the goal line twice.
Russell Foy recorded 10 tackles, including four for loss, with a sack. Jordan Anderson also notched 10 tackles, with six for loss and a pair of sacks, and Abundis intercepted a pass.

After a string of nine consecutive postseason appearances ended in 2024, the Cross Plains Buffaloes look to get back in the playoff mix in District 7-2A Division II as they welcome the winless Roscoe Plowboys in the league opener.
Cross Plains’ most recent outing was a 32-13 victory over Sterling City as the Buffaloes needed just 215 yards of total offense, with 212 coming on the ground, to tally the win, but gave away the ball twice. The Buffalo defense yielded only 132 total, including 118 rushing and forced a pair of turnovers.
Kye Schuman rushed for 98 yards and three touchdowns for Cross Plains, while Tyler Mackey also finished with 98 yards on the ground with two trips to the end zone. Landry Sevell added 14 yards on the ground and completed 1 of 2 passes for 3 yards to Mackey.
Defensively for Cross Plains, Colt Sanderson recorded 15 tackles followed by Lawson Brown with 11, Mackey with eight, Rylen Reed with five tackles and a sack, while Savell intercepted a pass and Brody Harris recovered a fumble.
Roscoe has fallen thus far to Hawley (33-14), Coahoma (14-3), Era (34-21), Stamford (28-7) and New Home (30-3).
Plowboys to watch include quarterback Jace Arnwine (583 passing yards, 4 TDs), running back Braden Long (220 rushing yards), and receivers Braxton Smith (15-146, 2 TDs) and Carter Gleaton (14-101, 1 TD).

The Mullin Bulldogs face the reigning District 14-A Division II champion Oglesby Tigers in the league opener for both teams Friday night.
Mullin suffered a 55-26 loss to Lohn last week, and came up short to Ranger, 55-33, the week prior.
In the loss to Ranger, the Bulldogs finished with 259 total yards – 132 rushing and 127 passing.
Mani Morales threw for 121 yards and a touchdown and added 63 yards on the ground and two more scores. Vash Langford rushed for 27 yards and a touchdown and caught six passes for 26 yards and reached the end zone once. Toby Kuhn pulled down two receptions for 30 yards and scored once, while Jaiden Langford added four catches for 66 yards and Aaron Porter rushed for 25 yards.
Defensively, Morales led Mullin with seven tackles with an interception, Johnathan Armendarez netted 4.5 tackles and recovered a fumble, Kuhn logged three tackles, and Lucas Cook registered 2.5 tackles.
Oglesby is coming off its only loss of the season, 59-58 to Coolidge, as the Tigers have defeated Abbott (44-38), Bluff Dale (50-45), Gholson (64-19) and Waco Methodist Children’s Home (74-26) thus far.

The Priddy Pirates are hopeful for better luck in District 14-A Division II competition as they open league play at the Cranfills Gap Lions Friday.
The Pirates had to forfeit last week’s pre-district finale to Rising Star due to injuries. Priddy’s lone win this season came against the Rocksprings JV (38-28) with losses this season to Panther Creek (46-0), Trent (57-8), Gustine (48-0), Santa Anna (50-0), and last week’s forfeit.
Pirates to keep an eye on this year include Shane Ahearn, Brailen Rea and Luis Reyes.
Cranfills Gap has defeated Morgan (20-12) and Lingleville (64-14), with losses against Blanket (54-8), Mount Calm (72-27), Cherokee (50-0) and Kopperl (80-52).

The Panther Creek Panthers look to end a two-game slide and pick up a victory in their District 15-A Division II open as they welcome the Lohn Eagles Friday night.
The Panthers lost 58-0 at Blackwell last week, which comes on the heels of a 54-7 defeat at the hands of Paint Creek.
Against Paint Creek, the Panthers mustered only 124 yards of total offense – 72 through the air and 52 on the ground.
Adan Wyatt returned a kick 64 yards for the lone Panther touchdown and also caught three passes for 62 yards, rushed for 23 yards, and threw for 10 yards on a completion to Carter Vogel. Caleb Hale tacked on 62 passing yards, and Caleb Storey rushed for 47 yards.
Defensively, Storey tallied eight tackles followed by Wyatt with seven, Aidan Patterson with four, Trever Brooks with three, Hale and Blayde Wilber with two apiece, and Jonah Torres with one tackle.
Lohn owns victories over Lueders-Avoca (54-44) and Olfen (19-16), with losses against Nueces Canyon (46-0), Paint Creek (48-0) and Three Way (54-0).
Eagles to watch include Dallas Keller, Kadin Reeves, Connor Nuncio, Sergio Sandoval, and Abel Salas.

The Santa Anna Mountaineers look to return to the win column in their final outing before the District 14-A Division I opener as they visit the winless Woodson Cowboys.
In a 56-6 loss to Zephyr last week, Santa Anna mustered just 96 yards of offense – 90 through the air and 6 on the ground – with a pair of turnovers.
Brock Brown threw for 90 yards with a touchdown to Jeremiah Davila, who caught two passes for 55 yards, including the 46-yard scoring reception. Kain Watson added two catches for 32 yards and Jordan Diggs rushed for 10 yards.
Defensively, Watson and Tony Blaine led the Mountaineers with seven tackles each followed by five apiece from Davila and Brown, three from Donovan Jackson and two by Landon Ragsdale.
Woodson has been defeated by Harrold (56-6), Ranger (20-13), Guthrie (45-0), Aspermont (52-6), Bryson (58-6) and Blanket (56-8) thus far this season.
Last week against Blanket, Woodson allowed 316 yards of total offense – 168 rushing and 148 passing.
