The Ark, a local organization that provides shelter to victims of domestic violence, is presenting its “Empty Shoes Display” at the Brown County Courthouse in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October. The presentation displays pairs of shoes to represent local victims of domestic violence, along with signage telling the stories of the victims.
The Ark first began operations in Brown County in 1984, as a branch of The Noah Project from Abilene. In 2000 it became a local stand-alone organization and subsequently changed its name to The Ark. It now serves Brown, Coleman, and Comanche Counties by providing safe shelter, for up to 42 days, for victims of physical violence and sexual assault to women, children, and men. The Ark’s shelter also has pet kennels on site, if its clients want or need to bring a dog or cat with them.
The shelter and other services provided by The Ark are confidential and free of charge. The Ark is funded by grants and community support. It also has a “Casino Night” fundraiser every year in February.
Once per week The Ark hosts Peer Support Group meetings, where victims of domestic violence can meet, share their stories, and learn from each other. The Ark also provides other services, including:
*** 24-hour crisis phone line
*** Emergency transportation
*** Emergency food and clothing
*** Outreach counseling
*** Assistance with short- and long-term goal and safety planning.
*** Accompaniment for meetings with Law Enforcement, Prosecutors, Courts, and Medical appointments
*** Legal advocacy for Protective Orders, Crime Victim Compensation, and Address Confidentiality
