The Howard Payne University Sumners Scholars hosted two classes from Early High School and one class from Brownwood High School in the Douglas MacArthur Academy of Freedom building on Tuesday, September 23. The campus visit was held in conjunction with Constitution Day, which was on September 17. The 40 students were from classes taught by HPU alumni Brittany Dunlap ’09, Sidney Sisemore ’21, and Simone Morris ’23.
The Academy tour highlighted critical milestones in the development of freedom principles (from Greek democracy to the U.S. Constitution) alongside examples of civic leaders, such as General Douglas MacArthur and former HPU President Dr. Guy D. Newman. After the tour, the high school students enjoyed lunch, where the Sumners Scholars shared the importance of civic responsibility and information about the Sumners program. Each high school student was given a gift bag, which included the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights.
“It has been a pleasure to see this event grow every year, with more of our local classes wanting to participate,” said Charles Lewis, director of development. “Our scholars are great examples of civically engaged students across various disciplines, and I know it makes an impact on these high schoolers getting a chance to learn from them. It is an event we look forward to hosting every year.”
The Sumners Foundation Scholarship Program provides scholarships to rising juniors at Howard Payne University who have an interest in civic leadership. The program allows these students to attend unique seminars and conferences throughout the year and provides funding for the scholars to host events for the community.
