Blake Hutchins picked up a singles victory and a mixed doubles win with Ashlyn Bundick for the Lions and Lady Lions (3-8, 1-1), who next host 7-4A rival Gatesville at 4 p.m. Tuesday

LAMPASAS – Bidding for a 2-0 start to District 7-4A tennis action, a flat performance from the Brownwood Lions and Lady Lions resulted in a 16-3 loss to Lampasas Thursday night.

“I’m pretty disappointed with the team’s performance tonight,” said Brownwood tennis head coach Dalton Hutchins. “We played extremely well against three tough teams last week, but we didn’t bring any of that confidence to Lampasas. and definitely didn’t play up to our potential. We are still in a good position to finish second in district, but the players are going to have to show up and take it. No one is just going to give it to them. But there are more matches to play, which means a chance for some redemption.”

The wins for Brownwood came from the mixed doubles team of Blake Hutchins and Ashlyn Bundick (6-7 [8], 6-3, 10-6 over Madelynn White and Josiah Copeland), Hutchins in No. 1 boys singles (2-6, 6-3, 10-4 over Elijah Copeland), and Trine Baugh in No. 3 boys singles (6-3, 7-6 [3] over Juan Gomez-Henriquez).

Brownwood (3-8, 1-1) has a quick turnaround as its next 7-4A match is set for 4 p.m. Tuesday as Gatesville visits.
