Food insecurity affects every community in the Unites States, and last year 50 million Americans turned to food banks for vital assistance – more than at any point over the last decade. In support of Hunger Action Month, Atmos Energy has donated $750,000 to food banks across the eight states it serves. ‘Fueling hope and growth for our neighbors’ is an essential pillar of the company’s Fueling Safe and Thriving Communities initiative, and these donations will help thousands of our most vulnerable neighbors with additional resources to obtain the nutritious meals their families need.

“Food banks like Bangs Food Pantry play a critical role in this community by offering access to fresh food as well as essential services such as nutrition education, advocacy, and assistance programs that address the root causes of hunger,” said Public Affairs Manager Molly Turk. “In the midst of Hunger Action Month, we are proud to make this donation and equip our nonprofit partners with additional resources to provide the most vulnerable families with immediate basic needs in the communities we serve.”

Hunger Action Month, first established by Feeding America in 2007, is a nationwide campaign held every September to raise awareness and improve the lives of those challenged by hunger and food insecurity. It takes significant resources to collect, store, and distribute food to those in need, so Atmos Energy has donated these funds to further the missions of food banks that partner with local charities, schools, churches, and shelters to support individuals and families struggling to afford basic necessities.

Atmos Energy also announced its commitment to fueling warmth for winter by donating an additional $1.5 million to be distributed in partnership with dozens of nonprofit organizations across the eight states it serves. These funds will help thousands of families settle unpaid utility bills and past-due debt in preparation for the winter heating season, when families depend on reliable and efficient natural gas service to stay safe and comfortable all winter long.

Among the many energy assistance agencies receiving funds is Coleman’s Cornerstone Community Action Agency, whose mission is to build thriving and self-sufficient communities by creating equal opportunities for all individuals and families. A Community in Action, Empowering People, Changing Lives, and Offering Hope to Achieve Self Sufficiency.
