
San Saba (1-1) at Goldthwaite (1-1)
7 p.m. Friday
One of the oldest high school football rivalries in the state rolls on Friday night as the 108th Battle of the River pits the San Saba Armadillos against the Goldthwaite Eagles at Gary Proffitt Stadium.
Goldthwaite is coming off its first victory of the season last week, a 59-0 home thrashing of Center Point. The Eagles churned out 409 yards with 366 coming on the ground in a turnover-free effort.
Landry Sanderson rushed for 157 yards and three touchdowns of 24, 13 and 10 yards, while Owen Campbell chipped in 113 yards and three more scores from 12, 2 and 46 yards away. Caden Wiedebusch tacked on 96 rushing yards and scored on carries of 12 and 23 yards, and also threw a 32-yard touchdown pass to Zach Rodriguez.
Wiedebusch also connected on an 11-yard gain with Slade Allen, the Eagles’ only other completion in five pass attempts.
San Saba, meanwhile, was dealt its first defeat last week by Junction, 20-6. The Armadillos were held to 155 yards of total offense by Junction – which also defeated Goldthwaite, 40-16 in Week 1 – with 146 of those coming on the ground.
Jason Everett rushed for 76 yards and a touchdown and Luke Tharp added 67 yards on the ground to highlight the Armadillos’ offensive effort.
On defense, Tharp notched 16 tackles with a fumble recovery followed by Melvin Umble with 13 tackles, Everett with 12 tackles, and Kolton Pierce with 10 tackles.

Gorman (1-0) at Zephyr (2-0)

The Zephyr Bulldogs will attempt to remain among the ranks of the unbeaten and keep their string of shutouts intact as well as they welcome the Gorman Panthers Friday night.
Zephyr, which has outscored its two foes 91-0 in games that ended at halftime both weeks, allowed just 35 yards in a 45-0 road victory Blackwell in Week 2, and amassed 249 yards – 191 rushing and 58 passing.
CJ Byers rushed for 63 yards and touchdowns of 6 and 43 yards, while Chayden Woodcock ran for a team-high 86 yards, threw a a 3-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Glossan, and caught a 29-yard scoring toss from Spencer Marwitz.
Marwitz finished 3 of 5 through the air for 44 yards and also tossed a 15-yard touchdown to Reid Hamm, while Jetson Gowin added an 11-yard scoring strike to Quayde Heard.
Defensive standouts for the Bulldogs were Ethan Prochaska with four tackles and Bauer Blair added three.
Gorman is coming off a 54-6 victory over Brookesmith last week, after dropping the season opener to Lometa.
Players to watch for the Panthers are Tyce Delgado, Gunner Rainey, Edger Gutierrez, Garrett Teague, Collin Brown, Scott Everhart, Tristan Lee, and Tristen Adams as Gorman utilizes multiple weapons in both its rushing and passing attack.

The Class A Division I No. 3 May Tigers look to bounce back from their first setback of the season and keep the Rochelle Hornets winless in the process.
After knocking off Class A Division I 2024 state finalist Whiteface, 64-46 in Week 1, May suffered a 42-14 road loss at Class A Division II No. 3 Richland Springs last week.
Despite the loss, the Tigers produced 318 total yards – 281 rushing and 37 passing.
Lane Goodson rushed for 187 yards and a touchdown while Jackson Lusk caught a 30-yard touchdown from Cayson Dail. Maddix Raffel chipped in 41 yards on the ground followed by Lusk with 21, Tyran Perry with 15, Kobey Morris with 10, and Kayden Psencik with 7 yards.
Defensively, Goodson recorded eight tackles trailed by five each from Watkins and Mikey Scheriger, four apiece from Morris and Lusk, and three by Raffel.
Rochelle’s season has started with losses at the hands of Medina, 57-8, and Menard, 65-16.
Players to watch for the Hornets – who return three starters on each side of the ball from a 5-5 team a year ago – include Jayce McCormick, Xavier Mendez, Chris Lopez, Estevan Gonzales, Maddox Howell, Ashton Davidson, Kendrick Teague, Gavin Rodriguez and Kasyn Keeney.

Blanket (1-1) at Evant (1-1)

The Blanket Tigers look to establish their first win streak of the season as they eye a second consecutive victory on the home turf of the Evant Elks Friday night.
Blanket rebounded from an opening 57-25 loss to Menard with a 54-8 trouncing of Cranfills Gap in Week 2.
The Tigers finished with 237 yards of total offense, including 208 rushing, with five touchdowns on the ground.
Kannon Kensing rushed for 136 yards and four scores, while Mason Beck chipped in 72 rushing yards with a trip to the end zone as well.
Through the air, AC French was 1 of 3 for 29 yards, with the completion being a touchdown to Cole Furry.
Defensively for Blanket, which forced five turnovers, Beck led the team with 13 tackles and returned an interception 80 yards for a touchdown. Kensing added 11 takedowns and recovered a fumble, Brian Shannon tallied nine tackles with an interception and a fumble recovery, French chipped in nine tackles, Brayden Cain collected seven tackles and picked off a pass, Abel McLaughlin recorded six tackles, and Ethan Tomme notched four tackles.
Evant also picked up its first win last week, 42-19, over Waco Christian, after opening the season with a 52-6 loss to Three Way.
The Elks are led by Edgar Dominguez (193 rushing yards, 2 TDs), Texan White (119 passing yards, 1 TD), Octavio Cardosa (65 passing yards, 4 TDs), Cooper Standford (7-127 receiving, 2 TDs) and Kase Keller (2-32 receiving, 2 TDs).

Moran (0-2) at Brookesmith (1-1)

In a game moved to Saturday morning due to a shortage of officials, the Brookesmith Mustangs look to return to win column while attempt to prevent the Moran Bulldogs from making their first trip.
The Mustangs are coming off a 54-6 loss to Gorman last week, but in their season-opening 85-37 opening win over Mullin, Brookesmith was led by Addy Heard, who rushed for 196 yards and six touchdowns and passed for 23 yards and another score. Heard also recorded six tackles, recovered a fumble and returned an interception for a touchdown.
Jace Julien contributed 80 yards on the ground and scored once and hauled in a 25-yard reception. Julien also tallied five tackles.
Robert Fachus caught a 27-yard touchdown pass and contributed four tackles, while Aden Bates pulled down a 25-yard catch and finished with seven tackles and an interception.
Taylor Jarvis returned a kick 45 yards for a touchdown, intercepted a pass and recovered a fumble for the Mustangs.
Austin Loyd threw for 32 yards, caught a 7-yard pass, and netted eight tackles, while Aryn Ribble logged seven tackles.
Moran’s season thus far has featured losses to Lueders-Avoca, 54-0, and Paint Creek, 57-6.

Two teams seeking their first victory of the season will cross paths Friday night as the Comanche Indians play host to the Eastland Mavericks.
Comanche’s year has featured losses of 54-24 to Class 4A Division II Caddo Mills and 62-23 to Class 3A Division I No. 7 Llano.
Against Llano last week, Comanche finished with 322 yards – 167 passing and 155 rushing – while yielding 566 yards – 294 on the ground and 272 through the air.
For the Indians, Cooper Welch was 11 of 23 for 167 yards with two scoring tosses and a pair of interceptions. CT Buford hauled in five receptions for 111 yards and both touchdowns, while Fernando Patino caught two passes for 21 yards. Others from Comanche making receptions were Caden Carroll (12 yards), Zaden Tello (11 yards) and Adrian Reyes (10 yards).
On the ground, Ladanian Smith rushed for a team-high 106 yards with a touchdown for Comanche, while Welch tacked on 26 yards and Tello contributed 23 yards.
Defensively for Comanche, Reyes collected 13 tackles followed by Tello and Smith with 12 apiece, Ky Keeter and Peyton Baugh with seven each, and Buford, Patino and Damian Aguilar each with six. Yahir Ibarra recovered a fumble for the Indians.
Eastland, in its new flexbone offense, has come up short against Clyde, 52-28, and Coleman, 29-0, thus far in 2025.
Mavericks to keep an eye on include Cameron Wilson (129 rushing yards), Kye Herrington, Samuel Cruz, Chris Ojeda, Bandy Johnson, Ben Bird, Xavier Rodriguez, Brenden Foust, and Isai Carrizales.

Mason (0-2) at Coleman (1-1)

The Coleman Bluecats are coming off their first setback of 2025, but look to keep the Mason Punchers out of the win column as the teams clash at Hufford Field Friday night.
After posting a 29-0 shutout victory over Eastland to start the season, the Bluecats came up short at Clifton last week, 29-0.
Coleman manufactured 231 yards – 121 on the ground and 110 through the air – with a turnover, while surrendering 255 yards – 181 rushing and 74 passing – with a takeaway.
Braylen Stewart scored on a 14-yard carry for the Bluecats while Paul Salas found the end zone on a 4-yard run.
Salas finished with a team-high 83 yards on the ground followed by Brayden Torres with 21 and Stewart with 17 yards.
Hunter Edington connected on 5 of 16 passes for 79 yards, while Torres completed his only pass attempt for 31 yards. Stewart led the team with four grabs for 80 yards while Salas added a 23-yard reception and Kyle Chambers caught a 7-yard pass.
Defensively for the Bluecats, Torres logged 10 tackles followed by Salas with nine and one for loss, seven each from Brady Elder, Darren Hurtado, and Jett Black, and six apiece from Lane Bowers and Easton Meador.
Mason’s season has featured losses to Class 3A Division II No. 2 Wall, 48-7, and Brady, 24-22, thus far.
Under new head coach Wade Griffin, the Punchers are led by running backs Clancy Osbourn, Fisher Bradley and Slade Buell, quarterback Grant Nobles, and receivers Trevor Loeffler and Kingston Garza.

The Cross Plains Buffaloes look to carry over the momentum of last week’s 75-8 victory over Abilene TLCA as they host the Hico Tigers, who also picked up their first win a week ago.
Against TLCA, Cross Plains finished with 483 yards against TLCA (0-2), including 458 yards rushing. Defensively, the Buffaloes surrendered just 26 yards, including -38 yards on the ground.
Tyler Mackey rushed for 206 yards on just nine carries and scored on runs of 22, 80 and 33 yards. Kye Schuman added 72 yards on the ground and touchdown runs of 10, 1 and 45 yards, while also throwing a 25-yard scoring pass to Colter Wedeking.
Anson Long tacked on 59 yards rushing and a 53-yard touchdown, William Albrecht garnered 43 yards and a 20-yard touchdown, and Kevin Hopkins notched 35 yards and two scores of 7 and 19 yards.
Defensively for the Buffaloes, Mackey’s five tackles were a team-best with three for loss, and Tony Wheeler notched three sacks and a fumble recovery. Brody Harris pounced on a fumble as well, while Colt Sanderson recorded a sack.
Hico suffered a 26-20 loss to Rio Vista in Week 1, but bounced back by a 38-6 decision over Moody last week.

The Class A Division II No. 3 Richland Springs Coyotes returned to form last week, picking up their first win of the season, as they now look to start a lengthy win streak with a visit from the Nueces Canyon Panthers.
Coming off a 52-6 loss to Class A Division I No. 1 Gordon, Richland Springs notched a 42-12 victory over Class A Division I No. 3 May lat week as Cohen Ethridge led the charge with 118 passing yards and a touchdown, 84 rushing yards and another score, and two receptions for 27 yards with another trip to the end zone.
Ethan Deeds passed for 58 yards and two touchdowns, Brice Roesler finished with four grabs for 71 yards and a score, and Rush Norris scored on a 36-yard catch.
On the ground, Billy Perry recorded 41 yards and a touchdown, while also catching an 8-yard pass. Eli Hutchins hauled in a 34-yard reception, and both Ethan Deeds and Evan Deeds caught 5-yard passes.
Defensively for the Coyotes, Ethridge logged 13 tackles followed by Norris with 12, Perry with 11, Ethan Deeds with 10, a fumble recovery, and an interception return 75 yards for a touchdown, Hutchins with nine tackles, and Layne Ward with six tackles.

The Santa Anna Mountaineers head to Ranger Friday night seeking their first victory of 2025, while the Bulldogs look to maintain an unblemished record.
Santa Anna is coming off a 65-20 loss to Rocksprings last week as the Mountaineers generated 305 yards – 168 passing and 137 rushing – as Brock Brown completed 7 of 26 passes for 131 yards with touchdowns of 18 yards to Jeremiah Davila and 34 yards to Kain Watson. Jayden Gibson added 139 yards on the ground and rushed for a 29-yard score.
Davila finished with three catches for 40 yards, Watson added two grabs for 42 yards, Eddie York hauled in a 36-yard reception, Khian Lewis nabbed a 17-yard catch, and Jordan Diggs caught two passes for 6 yards and added 29 yards rushing.
On defense, standouts for Santa Anna were Davila (14 tackles), Brown (12 tackles), Watson (6 tackles), Tony Blaine (6 tackles), Donovan Jackson (4 tackles), Lewis (3 tackles), York (2 tackles), Diggs (1 tackle) and Gibson (1 tackle).

Rising Star (2-0) at Perrin-Whitt (1-1)

The Rising Star Wildcats set their sights on a third consecutive victory to open the 2025 campaign, but the Perrin-Whitt Pirates stand in the way.
Fresh off a 53-28 road victory over Highland in Week 1, the Wildcats pummeled Lingleville, 52-6, this past Friday
In Week 2, Rising Star scored on runs of 6 and 25 yards by Chance Wells, as well as 1-yard interception return for a touchdown. JV Kelly added a 50-yard kick return for six points and a 1-yard touchdown run. Pacey McGinn also tacked on touchdown carries of 15 and 3 yards for Rising Star.
Kelly finished with 45 passing yards and 39 rushing yards, Wells tallied 49 yards on the ground, and Leland Schenk and Kaiden Griffith added receptions of 35 and 10 yards, respectively.
Defensively, Kelly led the way with 11 tackles and a fumble recovery along with 10 each from Schenk and Kason McGinn, seven from Wells, six from Juakeen Froese, and three tackles from Griffith.
Perrin-Whitt won its season opener over Gold-Burg, 48-14, before dropping a 60-12 decision to Aquilla last week.
Pirates to watch include Cole Keeney, Joseph Welch, Travis Welch, Nate Scruggs, Noah Morris, Riley Sims, and Julian Ramos.

Facing their first varsity foe of the season last week, the Sidney Eagles were doubled up by Eden, 28-14, and are looking for better results as they venture to Stephenville Faith.
In Week 1, Sidney picked up a 22-6 victory over the Strawn JV . Leading the charge in the win were Rees Miller with 95 yards rushing and a touchdown, 25 yards passing and a touchdown, and a 33-yard scoring reception. Miller also recorded 15 tackles, recovered a fumble and booted two extra-points kicks.
Ethan Scantling threw a 33-yard touchdown pass, added a 7-yard reception, rushed for 6 yards, and amassed 14 tackles.
Ryan Crawford hauled in an 18-yard scoring reception and tallied 15 tackles, while Dylan Terpstra caught two passes for 10 yards with 13 tackles, and Jerry McDaniel completed an 8-yard pass and netted seven tackles.
Stephenville Faith flattened Lingleville, 67-0, in Week 1 and followed with a 41-24 loss to Three Way in Week 2.

Buckholts (1-1) at Mullin (0-2)

The Mullin Bulldogs came within a touchdown of their first 2025 victory last week, and will look to get over the hump Friday night as they play host to the Buckholts Badgers.
Though Mullin came up short, 49-42, against Panther Creek last week, the Bulldogs finished with 217 yards total yards – 113 rushing and 104 passing – with six turnovers.
Mani Morales passed for 97 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 54 yards; Vash Langford rushed for 62 yards and a touchdown and caught four passes for 51 yards; Jaidan Langford grabbed five catches for 28 yards and scored once; and Johnathan Armendarez hauled in a 26-yard reception.
Defensively for the Bulldogs, Chandler Moreno notched six tackles and returned a fumble for a touchdown, while Morales logged five tackles.
Buckholts dropped a 56-8 decision to Gustine last week after starting the year with a 58-12 triumph over Waco Methodist Children’s Home.
Badgers to keep an eye on include Marc King, Joseph Vega, Miguel Hernandez, Braxton Reese, Johandy Ventura and Joseph Hansen-Blum.

Water Valley (2-0) at Panther Creek (2-0)

The Panther Creek Panthers are off to a perfect start in 2025, but will face their toughest test to date as Class A Division I No. 2 Water Valley comes to town.
In last week’s 49-42 victory over Mullin, Panther Creek was sparked by Adan Wyatt’s 120 rushing yards and three touchdowns, to go along with 69 passing yards and two more scores, as well as two catches for 47 yards and another trip to the end zone.
Caleb Hale added 56 yards passing and a touchdown and he also caught a 50-yard touchdown. Izaak Olinger scored on a 16-yard pass play as well.
Defensively, Caleb Storey logged 15 tackles, including six for loss, with a 45-yard fumble return for a touchdown. Trevor Brooks added eight tackles with four for loss, Wyatt finished with seven with one for loss, Hale notched six tackles and returned an interception 58 yards, Blade Wilber tallied four tackles with an 18-yard interception return, Olinger recovered a fumble, and Kutter Cannon added a tackle.
Water Valley – coming off an 11-3 state semifinalist campaign – has notched victories over Grandfalls-Royalty, 54-0, and Hermleigh, 56-8.
Wildcats to watch include Boston Wiese, Landon Lacy, Brylan Naylor, Branson Lacy, Hudson Wiese, and Cole Baker.

The Priddy Pirates notched a 38-28 victory over the Rocksprings JV last week after their game with Walnut Springs was canceled, and this week they seek their first victory against a varsity foe – the Trent Gorillas.
Players to watch for Priddy – who were blanked in their season opener by Panther Creek, 46-0 – include Shane Ahearn, Trapper Schoenhals, Brailen Rea and Luis Reyes.
Trent has opened its season with a 52-6 win over Rotan and a 76-27 loss to Wilson.
Keagan Hollis has rushed for 470 yards and six touchdowns for the Gorillas while Chanse Williams has chipped in 100 yards with three trips to the end zone thus far.
