WEEK 2 GRIDIRON GLIMPSE: Eight local squads target 2-0 starts to season

CJ Byers (12) and the Zephyr Bulldogs venture to Blackwell in Week 2 after starting the 2025 campaign with a 46-0 home victory over Veribest

May (1-0) at Richland Springs (0-1)

7:30 p.m. Friday

For the second consecutive week, the May Tigers and Richland Springs Coyotes find themselves in a Top 5 showdown.
Class A Division I No. 2 May is coming off a 64-46 victory over Whiteface, which at the time was ranked in the Tigers’ current spot after reaching the 2024 state championship game.

Meanwhile, Class A Division II No. 4 Richland Springs is looking to bounce back from a 52-6 loss to Class A Division I No. 1 Gordon, the reigning state champion.

In May’s victory last week, Lane Goodson passed for 153 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 72 yards and three more scores, while Jackson Lusk finished with 93 yards receiving and two touchdowns, 30 yards rushing and another score, and returned a fumble 20 yards for a touchdown.

Kaden Watkins chipped in 63 yards receiving and a touchdown, Maddix Raffel rushed for 48 yards and a touchdown, while other offensive standouts included Kobey Morris with 23 yards passing and 8 yards receiving, and Cayson Dail with 16 yards receiving.

Defensively, Goodson led the way with nine tackles including two for loss; Mikey Scheriger logged six tackles, one interception and one fumble recovery; Morris recorded six tackles with three for loss; Raffel added five tackles, one for loss and recovered a fumble; Lusk chipped in five tackles with two for loss; Watkins registered five tackles and one interception; Tyran Perry logged five tackles; Kayden Psencik and J.D. Harrell each tallied a pair of tackles; and Brody Stice finished with one tackle.

Jacob Brown, a 2018 May graduate, earned his first victory as a head coach with the Tigers triumph.

For Richland Springs, in its first game under new head coach Harley Ethridge, the Coyotes kept it close with Gordon for a while before the Longhorns were able to pull away.

Players to watch for Richland Springs include Billy Perry, Cohen Ethridge, Brice Roesler, Eli Hutchins, Ethan Deeds and Evan Deeds.

According to sixmanfootball.com, May is a 16-point favorite, while Dave Campbell’s Texas Football lists Richland Springs as a 3-point favorite.

Cranfills Gap (1-0) at Blanket (0-1)

7:30 p.m. Friday

The Blanket Tigers will attempt to land in the win column for the first time in 2025 as they welcome the Cranfills Gap Lions in the home opener.

Blanket dropped a 57-25 decision at reigning District 15-A Division I champion Menard last week, while Cranfills Gap notched a 20-12 victory over Morgan.

The Tigers manufactured 396 total yards – 278 rushing and 118 passing – with four turnovers against Menard.

Kannon Kensing rushed for 198 yards and three touchdowns and caught two passes for 72 yards. Mason Beck chipped in 90 yards on the ground with a touchdown and grabbed a 15-yard catch. AC French connected on 7 of 9 passes for 48 yards, Brian Shannon finished with a team-best four catches for 24 yards, and Ethan Tomme caught a 7-yard pass.

Defensively, Kensing notched 10 tackles and recovered a fumble trailed by Beck with seven tackles, Abel McLaughlin with six, French with five, Cole Furry with four, Shannon with three, Tomme and Brayden Cain with two each, Karter Keel with one tackle, and Gustavo Rodriguez blocked a kick.

Cranfills Gap is returning all six starters on both sides of the ball and has already matched its win total for the 2024 campaign.

According to sixmanfootball.com, Blanket is a 45-point favorite, while Dave Campbell’s Texas Football lists the Tigers as a 42-point favorite.

Zephyr (1-0) at Blackwell (0-1)

7:30 p.m. Friday

The Zephyr Bulldogs began their quest for a fourth consecutive district championship and second straight bi-district title with a resounding 46-0 home victory over Veribest, and in Week 2 will attempt to deny the Blackwell Hornets their first victory.

In the triumph last week, Zephyr produced 200 total yards – 156 rushing and 44 passing – on just 12 snaps, scored a total of six touchdowns, and yielded only 24 yards of total offense with a pair of takeaways.

Chayden Woodcock rushed for 127 yards and three touchdowns, CJ Byers chipped in 35 yards on the ground and a score, and Bauer Blair hauled in a 44-yard scoring reception from Josiah Gowin and scored another touchdown on a 20-yard fumble recovery. Wyatt Frank also pounced on a loose ball for the Bulldog defense.

Blackwell – which posted a 5-7 record last year and reached the area round of the playoffs – is coming off a season-opening 72-24 loss to Aspermont.

Players to watch for the Hornets include Jacob Rivera, Kreed Cummings, Brayden Claborn, Rennder Gardenhire, Jaxon Shipman, Craig Guelker, and Slade Wilkinson.

According to sixmanfootball.com, Zephyr is a 26-point favorite, while Dave Campbell’s Texas Football lists the Bulldogs as a 4-point favorite.

Brookesmith (1-0) at Gorman (0-1)

7:30 p.m. Friday

The Brookesmith Mustangs rolled to a convincing victory in their season opener while the Gorman Panthers will attempt to rebound from a setback to start the 2025 campaign.

In Brookesmith’s 85-37 opening win over Mullin, the Mustangs were led by Addy Heard, who rushed for 196 yards and six touchdowns and passed for 23 yards and another score. Heard also recorded six tackles, recovered a fumble and returned an interception for a touchdown.

Jace Julien contributed 80 yards on the ground and scored once and hauled in a 25-yard reception. Julien also tallied five tackles.

Robert Fachus caught a 27-yard touchdown pass and contributed four tackles, while Aden Bates pulled down a 25-yard catch and finished with seven tackles and an interception.

Taylor Jarvis returned a kick 45 yards for a touchdown, intercepted a pass and recovered a fumble for the Mustangs.

Austin Loyd threw for 32 yards, caught a 7-yard pass, and netted eight tackles, while Aryn Ribble logged seven tackles.

Gorman dropped a 40-16 decision to Lometa last week as Tyce Delgado rushed for 76 yards and both Panther touchdowns, while passing for 10 yards and he caught a 7-yard pass. Scott Everhart added 43 yards on the ground, while Garrett Teague caught two passes for 13 yards and completed one pass for 7 yards.

The Panthers finished with just 134 yards of total offense, including 119 rushing.

Comanche (0-1) at Llano (1-0)

7 p.m. Friday

The Comanche Indians began the season with a 54-24 setback at the hands of Class 4A Division II Caddo Mills last week, and face another chore in the Class 3A Division I No. 7 Llano Yellowjackets this week.

Against Caddo Mills in the opener, Comanche produced 262 yards of total offense – 183 passing and 79 rushing.

Quarterback Cooper Welch connected on 13 of 32 passes for 183 yards with two scoring strikes and an interception. CT Buford hauled in a team-best five receptions for 97 yards and scored once while Fernando Patino added four catches for 51 yards, Adrian Reyes added two for 32 yards, and Zaden Tello grabbed two receptions for 12 yards with a trip to the end zone.

On the ground, Ladanian Smith rushed for a team-best 64 yards followed by Ryker Seegmiller with 11 yards and Tello with 4 yards.

Llano is coming off a 55-14 triumph over Lytle to kick off its campaign.

The Yellowjackets yielded just 144 yards of total offense with five takeaways, while amassing 489 yards, with 309 coming on the ground.

Quarterback Luke Davis passed for 171 yards and five touchdowns and rushed for 40 yards and another score. Cash Lynch caught six passes for 84 yards and three touchdowns while Graham Prokop grabbed three receptions for 89 yards and scored twice. Brayton Shaw rushed for a team-high 99 yards and River Thomison tacked on 73 yards on the ground.

Niko Arms and Grayson Lillie led the Yellowjackets with six tackles each, while JD Friday, Austin Humphries and Emerson Pool intercepted passes, while Jose Sillas and Isaiah Aguilar recovered fumbles. Sillas also recorded a sack.

According to Harris Ratings Weekly, Comanche is a 17-point underdog while Dave Campbell’s Texas Football lists the Indians as a 36-point underdog.

Coleman (1-0) at Clifton (1-0)

7 p.m. Friday

After starting the 2024 campaign with seven straight defeats, the Coleman Bluecats kicked off 2025 with 29-0 shutout of Eastland at home in Week 1. Now, the Bluecats will attempt to hand the Clifton Cubs their first loss of the year.

In the win last week, Coleman compiled 353 total yards – 188 passing and 165 rushing – while surrendering just 136 yards – all on the ground – to Eastland, and forcing five turnovers.

Hunter Edington threw for 188 yards with a pair of touchdowns – 72 and 20 yards to Jayden Smith, who finished with three grabs for 100 yards.

Braylon Stewart rushed for 62 yards, including a 28-yard touchdown, and caught five passes for 24 yards. Brayden Torres chipped in 57 yards on the ground and a 9-yard score, Paul Salas rushed for 55 yards with two grabs for 16 yards, and Jett Black caught a 43-yard pass.

Sam Penn booted a 31-yard field goal for the Bluecats.

Defensively for Coleman, Darren Hurtado chalked up 11 tackles followed by 10 each from Salas, Lane Bowers, Jason Strickland and Micah Lackey, who pounced on three fumbles. Black also contributed nine tackles and recovered two fumbles.

Clifton is coming off a 27-0 victory over Riesel last week as the Cubs generated 311 yards of total offense, with 289 coming on the ground.

Quarterback Jackson Ritz rushed for 198 yards and a touchdown and threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Kaleb Wyly – the Cubs’ only completion of the game. Rico De La Hoya and Rowdy Bishop also added rushing touchdowns.

Bishop and Eduardo Garcia led Clifton with eight tackles while Ritz intercepted a pass.

According to Harris Ratings Weekly, Coleman is a 7-point favorite while Dave Campbell’s Texas Football lists the Bluecats as a 3-point underdog.

Junction (1-0) at San Saba (1-0)

7:30 p.m. Friday

The San Saba Armadillos are targeting a 2-0 start, but so is their Week 2 opponent, the reigning District 14-A Division II champion Junction Eagles.

The Armadillos downed Grape Creek, 27-12, in the season opener as San Saba tallied 318 yards of total offense – 286 on the ground and 32 through the air – without a turnover.

Luke Tharp rushed for 142 yards and a pair of touchdowns while Jason Everett chipped in 74 yards and reached the end zone once. Enrique Mendoza also added 62 yards rushing.

Through the air, JJ Romero completed all three of his pass attempts for 32 yards with a touchdown to Cash Bryant, who hauled in two catches for 20 yards. Danny English also grabbed a 12-yard catch.

Defensively, the Armadillos received 17 tackles with three for loss from Everett, 15 tackles and three for loss from Grayden Lebow, eight tackles each from Melvin Umble and Kaylub Roberts, and Tharp intercepted three passes to go along with four tackles.

Junction is coming off a 40-16 victory over San Saba’s archrival, Goldthwaite, in the season opener, a game in which Junction trailed 16-13 early in the third period but scored the final four touchdowns of the contest.

Chasen Doyal threw a pair of touchdown passes, Kode Bierschwale rushed for two scores, and Aydin O’Brien added a scoring sprint as well as Junction tallied 231 total yards – 150 rushing and 81 passing.

Defensively, Bryan Gonzalez recorded 7 tackles with 2 for loss, Cason Roberts netted 5.5 tackles and returned an interception for a touchdown, and Kelton Bannowsky finished with 3 tackles, 2 for loss, and 1 sack.

According to Harris Ratings Weekly, San Saba is a 15-point underdog while Dave Campbell’s Texas Football lists the Armadillos as a 7-point underdog.

Center Point (1-0) at Goldthwaite (0-1)

7:30 p.m. Friday

The Goldthwaite Eagles will compete in their home opener Friday night as they look to bounce back from a season-opening setback and hand the Center Point Pirates their first defeat.

Despite leading 16-13 in the third period, Goldthwaite dropped a 40-16 decision at Junction in Week 1 as the Eagles finished with 203 yards – 109 passing and 94 rushing – with one turnover, while allowing 242 yards – 161 on the ground and 81 through the air – with one takeaway.

Aidyn Lee completed 11 of 13 passes for 109 yards with a 24-yard touchdown to Zach Rodriguez, who caught two passes for 55 yards. Slade Allen led Goldthwaite with six catches for 39 yards, Casen Wiedebusch caught two passes for 11 yards and Landry Sanderson hauled in a 1-yard catch.

On the ground, Owen Campbell rushed for a team-best 49 yards followed by 16 from Wiedebusch, 12 yards from Sanderson, 9 from Max Storm and 6 yards from Lee.

Center Point picked up a 21-13 victory over Pettus out of the gate. The Pirates finished with 298 yards – including 260 rushing – while allowing 248 yards – 177 passing and 71 rushing, and both teams turned over the ball once. Din Arreola threw a 37-yard touchdown pass and Connor Holt rushed for a 10-yard score for Center Point.

According to Harris Ratings Weekly, Goldthwaite is a 42-point favorite while Dave Campbell’s Texas Football lists the Eagles as a 42-point favorite.

Abilene TLCA (0-1) at Cross Plains (0-1)

7 p.m. Friday

The Cross Plains Buffaloes will attempt to secure their first victory of the season and prevent the Abilene TLCA Eagles from doing the same as the two clash Friday night.

Cross Plains is coming off a 50-13 loss to Haskell in which the Buffaloes were limited to 150 yards of total offense – all on the ground – with three turnovers.

The Buffaloes received 75 rushing yards from Kevin Hopkins, 27 yards and a touchdown from Kye Schuman, 25 yards from Tyler Mackey, and 15 yards and a touchdown from Kutter Reed.

Defensively, Cross Plains surrendered 461 yards – 268 rushing and 193 passing – with a pair of takeaways.

Standouts included Tony Wheeler with seven tackles and one for loss, Jessey Bradford with six tackles and two for loss, Hopkins with six tackles, Colt Sanderson with five tackles and a fumble recovery, and Anson Long and Brody Harris with five tackles apiece.

Abilene TLCA suffered a 53-14 loss to Munday in Week 1 as the Eagles finished with 236 total yards – 142 rushing and 94 passing – with two turnovers, but gave up 424 yards – 223 rushing and 201 passing – and created just one takeaway. Tyler Johnston threw a 72-yard touchdown pass and Ezequiel Saldana scored on a 59-yard run late for account for the TLCA trips to the end zone.

According to Harris Ratings Weekly, Cross Plains is a 28-point favorite while Dave Campbell’s Texas Football lists the Buffaloes as a 26-point favorite.

Rocksprings (1-0) at Santa Anna (0-1)

7:30 p.m. Friday

The Santa Anna Mountaineers will attempt to put a rocky start behind them as they welcome the Rocksprings Angoras in their home opener.

Santa Anna was blanked by Bronte, 45-0, last week, while Rocksprings – which dropped down to six-man after a 2-7 campaign as an 11-man school in 2024 – upended Sanderson, 60-12.

In the loss, the Mountaineers finished with 93 yards of total offense – 68 rushing and 25 passing – with one turnover. Jayden Gibson rushed for 31 yards, Brock Brown added 24 and Jeremiah Davila tacked on a 13-yard carry. Through the air, Brown was 1 of 4 for 25 yards, that completion to Davila, and he also tossed an interception.

Defensively, Brown led Santa Anna with seven tackles followed by four each from Kain Watson and Khian Lewis, three apiece from Davila, Diggs and Gibson, two from Donovan Jackson, and one by Eddie York. Gibson also forced a fumble that Diggs recovered.

Rocksprings High School has an enrollment of just 65 students, 40 below the six-man line as the school district opted to make the move ahead of the 2025 season. Rocksprings last had an 11-man enrollment number during the 2008-09 school year, which was 122 students at the time.

Lingleville (0-1) at Rising Star (1-0)

7:30 p.m. Friday

The Rising Star Wildcats opened their season in resounding fashion with a 53-28 victory over Highland, and look to continue their winning ways in the home opener against the Lingleville Cardinals.

Offensive standouts for the Wildcats in the season opener included JV Kelly with 137 rushing yards and three touchdowns, two receptions for 48 yards and two more scores, and 21 passing yards with another touchdown. Chance Wells threw for 66 yards with a pair of scoring strikes and chipped in eight receptions for 88 yards.

Anthony Pollard passed for 13 yards and a touchdown and caught two passes for 18 yards. Leland Schenk contributed a 16-yard touchdown catch, Juakeen Froese added a 5-yard scoring reception, Kason McGinn grabbed a 10-yard catch and Kaiden Griffith caught a 6-yard pass.

Defensive standouts for Rising Star included McGinn with 12 tackles, Pollard with 11 tackles and a fumble recovery, Wells with nine tackles and seven for loss, Kelly with eight tackles and six for loss with a fumble recovery, Froese with five tackles, Griffith with four and Schenk with three.

Lingleville was dealt a 67-0 defeat by Stephenville Faith in Week 1.

The Cardinals return just two players from a 2-6 team a year ago as players to watch include Simon Dominguez, Klayson Guajardo, Hudson Guajardo, Brody Hurt and Elias Tovar.

Eden (1-0) at Sidney (1-0)

7:30 p.m. Friday

The Sidney Eagles picked up a 22-6 victory over the Strawn JV last week, and will face their first varsity foe Friday night as the Eden Bulldogs come to town.

Leading the charge for Sidney in the win last week were Rees Miller with 95 yards rushing and a touchdown, 25 yards passing and a touchdown, and a 33-yard scoring reception. Miller also recorded 15 tackles, recovered a fumble and booted two extra-points kicks.

Ethan Scantling threw a 33-yard touchdown pass, added a 7-yard reception, rushed for 6 yards, and amassed 14 tackles.

Ryan Crawford hauled in an 18-yard scoring reception and tallied 15 tackles, while Dylan Terpstra caught two passes for 10 yards with 13 tackles, and Jerry McDaniel completed an 8-yard pass and netted seven tackles.

Eden blanked Paint Rock, 50-0, to start its season as the Bulldogs finished with 252 yards of total offense behind a balanced effort of 128 passing yards and 124 rushing yards, while the defense forced three turnovers.

Players to watch for Eden include Blake Teeple, Julian Morales, Nate Barba, Avery Condarco, Coen Hoelscher, Gharitt Cogbill, Jorge Mendez, and Mauro Ponce.

According to sixmanfootball.com, Sidney is a 12-point underdog while Dave Campbell’s Texas Football lists the Eagles as an 11-point underdog.

Panther Creek (1-0) at Mullin (0-1)

7:30 p.m. Friday

The Panther Creek Panthers will look to carry over the momentum from a season-opening victory while the Mullin Bulldogs will try to regroup after an opening setback.

Panther Creek notched a 46-0 shutout victory over Priddy in Week 1 as the Panther defense yielded negative yardage while the offense generated 247 yards – 171 with seven touchdowns on the ground, and 76 through the air.

Caleb Storey rushed for 86 yards and three touchdowns, Cobi Howard chipped in 33 yards and a score, Adan Wyatt finished with 29 yards and scored twice, and Caleb Hale tacked on 23 yards with a trip to the end zone.

Through the air, Hale completed all three of his pass attempts as receptions were made by Blayde Wilber for 29 yards, Wyatt for 28 yards, and Aidan Patterson for 19 yards.

Defensive standouts for the Panthers included Wyatt with nine tackles and an interception; Storey with six tackles, one interception, and one fumble recovery; Patterson with five tackles and a fumble recovery; Kutter Cannon with four tackles and three for loss; and Howard with an interception.

Mullin suffered an 85-37 loss to Brookesmith last week as the Bulldogs were sparked by Mani Morales, who passed for 143 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 55 yards and another score. Toby Kuhn added 63 yards through the air and a touchdown, while Aaron Porter finished with four catches for 84 yards and two scores, Chandler Moreno tallied seven receptions for 79 yards with a trip to the end zone, and Johnathan Armendarez caught a 26-yard touchdown pass.

Defensively for Mullin, Moreno tallied 8 tackles and returned an interception for a touchdown, Morales finished with 5.5 tackles and a fumble recovery, and Kuhn recorded 5 tackles.

According to sixmanfootball.com, Panther Creek is a 14-point favorite while Dave Campbell’s Texas Football lists Mullin as a 5-point favorite.

Rocksprings JV at Priddy (0-1)

7 p.m. Thursday

The Priddy Pirates’ Friday night contest against Walnut Springs was canceled due to a lack of players for Walnut Springs, and the Pirates have picked up a contest against the Rocksprings JV.

The Pirates are coming off a season-opening 46-0 setback at the hands of Panther Creek.
