Cooper Morgan notched a 6-2, 4-6, 12-10 singles victory to aid the cause for Brownwood (3-4, 1-0), which is back in non-district action Saturday at Sweetwater at 9 a.m. and at Snyder at 1:30 p.m.

GLEN ROSE – The Brownwood High tennis team opened District 7-4A competition Tuesday with its second consecutive victory, 12-7 over Glen Rose.

Seven of Brownwood’s triumphs came from the Lions including the doubles teams of No. 1 Trine Baugh and Eric Smith (6-1, 6-3 over Camden Henson and Levi Wilson) and No. 2 Aiden Oplotnik and Ian Cervantes (6-0, 2-6, 10-7 over Coben Cowell and Aaron Tonche). Notching singles wins were No. 1 Blake Hutchins (6-1, 6-2 over Henson), No. 2 Smith (6-1, 6-3 over Wilson) No. 3 Baugh (6-0, 6-4 over Ronit Luhana), No. 4 Oplotnik (6-4, 6-4 over Tonche) and No. 5 Cooper Morgan (6-2, 4-6, 12-10 over Oscar Zobel).

For the Lady Lions, singles victories were claimed by No. 1 Ashlyn Bundick (6-0, 6-3 over Karlee Mullins), No. 2 Kirra Neff (4-6, 6-2, 10-5 over Isabella McKenzie) and No. 3 Jami Patterson (6-4, 6-4 over Lainey Schlabs), along with the No. 1 doubles tandem of Neff and Patterson (6-6 [7-4], 6-3 over Mullins and McKenzie).

The mixed doubles match also went in favor of the Brownwood duo of Huchins and Bundick (6-1, 6-0 over Cody Stegemoller and Gracie Chadwell).

“The boys played really well and I’m proud of the girls showing up in singles,” said Brownwood High tennis head coach Dalton Hutchins. “Eric and Trine remained undefeated in boys doubles, while Ashlyn and Blake remain undefeated in mixed doubles, and Cooper Morgan and Kirra Neff won in 10-point tiebreakers to clinch the match for us.”

The Lions and Lady Lions (3-4, 1-0) will visit both Sweetwater at 9 a.m. and Snyder at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday in their next matches. Brownwood’s next district action falls on Sept. 18 with a trip to Lampasas. The Lions and Lady Lions will host Abilene Cooper on Sept. 11 and battle Fredericksburg and Kerrville Tivy in Mason on Sept. 13 before returning to 7-4A competition.
