John William Petty, age 77, of Comanche, Texas, passed away peacefully on August 20, 2025, at Legacy Estates in Comanche.

John was born on October 10, 1947, in Post, Texas, to Ben and Faye Dell Petty.  John was a beloved son, brother, father, and friend. He spent his life dedicated to his family and community, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, hard work, and quiet strength. John had a steady presence and a generous heart, always willing to lend a hand or offer a listening ear.

On May 6, 2007, John was united in marriage to Karen Carr. Together they shared 18 wonderful years of companionship, laughter, and love. Whether on the lake fishing or cheering on their grandkids, their time together was full of treasured memories.

John worked for 25 years as a patrolman and lineman with Brazos Electric before retiring. He was known for his strong work ethic, dependable nature, and quiet sense of humor. An avid fisherman, John was happiest with a fishing pole in hand, surrounded by his kids and grandkids, sharing stories and making memories on the water.

He loved watching football games and discussing every play with his children and grandchildren. John was also a loyal supporter of the Lipan Indians basketball team.  He especially enjoyed watching them play in the dome at Comanche during last year’s playoff run.  John had many memories of Lipan that he often talked about with pride.

John is survived by his loving wife, Karen Petty of Comanche; his children: Jeffrey Don Petty of Tolar, Christina Lynn Cavasa of Lipan, Gregory Keith Petty and wife Kim of Bluff Dale, Stan Hicks and wife Debbie of Early, and Jennifer Rucker and husband James of Comanche.

He is also survived by his siblings: brother Mark Randall Petty of Mineral Wells, and sisters Annette Montgomery of Possum Kingdom and Melissa Montgomery of Granbury.

John was a proud grandfather to Tyler Petty and wife Andrea of Tolar, Dylan Petty of Dallas, Kendall Cavasa of Lipan, Joshua Rucker and Jaxson Rucker of Comanche, and Chelsea Button and husband John David of Gustine.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Faye Dell Petty.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at 10:30 AM, followed by a memorial service to celebrate John’s life at 11:00 AM, at Heartland Funeral Home, 1508 North Austin, Comanche, TX.

John William Petty will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, and loyal friend. His quiet strength, love of family, and joy in life’s simple pleasures will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
