Bailey Nobles, a sophomore biomedical sciences major from Robstown, recently spent two weeks in Hue, Vietnam, as part of the FutureDocs Abroad program.

The FutureDocs Abroad program is an honors program that allows undergraduate students to gain experience in medicine before they attend medical school. The purpose of the program is to motivate and direct students across the U.S. that aspire to have careers in the medical field.

“We are incredibly proud of Bailey for her initiative in seeking out an international opportunity like the ‘FutureDocs Abroad’ program to further prepare her for a career in health care,” said Dr. Kristen Hutchins, dean of HPU’s School of Science and Mathematics. “She is a focused, intelligent and compassionate young woman who will do great things in her future.”

Nobles first connected with FutureDocs Abroad as a senior in high school when she was nominated to go to a conference in Boston, Massachusetts. During the conference she was selected as a delegate and later recognized as a top delegate, earning her a chance to study abroad the following summer.

“The FutureDocs Abroad program is an extra edge to get into medical school,” said Nobles. “A lot of med schools take pride in selecting students that have participated in it, so it was a pretty big deal to get selected to go abroad.”

Nobles spent June 28 – July 13 in Vietnam shadowing doctors, performing procedures, observing surgeries and studying different branches of medicine.

“My experience was nothing short of amazing,” she said. “I was in the hospital, actively getting to help patients. I got two weeks of hard work that was so rewarding, and I knew I was helping people.”

Nobles has always wanted to be a dermatologist, but while in Vietnam she had the opportunity to shadow doctors and study different fields of medicine.

“I got to see a whole new realm of what else is offered in the medical field and it gave me an idea of what my future could look like,” said Nobles. “It showed me what else I might be interested in, and it was really cool to get that kind of experience. I feel like my call in life is to help people and I got to do that there.”
