Brownwood tennis tumbles in season opener to Hereford, 15-4

Eric Smith won a singles match and doubles match, with Trine Baugh, to account for half of the match victories Thursday for Brownwood, which hosts Mineral Wells at 9 a.m. and Keller Fossil Ridge at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

ABILENE – The Brownwood Lions and Lady Lions tennis team came up on the short end in Thursday night’s season-opening match at Hardin-Simmons University against Hereford, 15-4.

Securing victories in their matches Thursday were the Lions No. 2 doubles team of Trine Baugh and Eric Smith (6-3, 6-2 over Josh Martinez and Lucas Woodard), Smith in No. 3 boys singles (7-6, 6-3 over Martinez), Aiden Oplotnik in No. 4 boys singles (4-6, 6-4, 10-5 over Woodard), and Eli Hutson and Willow Camp in mixed doubles by default.

The Brownwood varsity roster this season consists of Smith, Baugh, Oplotnik, Hutson, Blake Hutchins, Cooper Morgan, Ian Cervantes and Caden Adkins on the boys side, and Camp, Ashlyn Bundick, Anna Daniel, Emory May, Gigi Rodriguez, Kirra Neff, Jami Patterson, and Aerin Gardner for the girls.

Brownwood (0-1) will open the home portion of its schedule on Saturday as the Lions and Lady Lions host Mineral Wells at 9 a.m. and Keller Fossil Ridge at 1:30 p.m.
