A funeral service for Bobbie Davis, 88, of Goldthwaite, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church of Goldthwaite. Interment will follow at Rock Springs Cemetery. Visitation will be held from  5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Stacy-Wilkins Funeral Home in Goldthwaite. Bobbie Davis passed away Sunday, Aug. 3.

Bobbie Jewel Slaughter was born April 28, 1937, to James Preston and Eva Jewel Chesser Slaughter in the family home east of Goldthwaite, Texas joining older brother Billy Preston. Billy and Bobbie later welcomed younger brother, James Carrol.

She began her education at the small Midway School a year early, as the school needed one more student to stay open. After the family moved to Mullin, Texas she continued her education there before transferring to Goldthwaite to finish High School, graduating in 1955.

While living in Mullin, the family lived in “The Telephone House”. Her mother was employed as the Switchboard operator for Southwestern States Telephone. Bobbie would sometimes cover the switchboard for her mother if needed. After graduation, she moved to Brownwood, Texas to live with her aunt and uncle while formally working for the telephone company. Weekends were spent in Mullin or going to the theater in Goldthwaite with her younger brother and friends. One such weekend she was introduced to the handsome older brother of a former schoolmate. That handsome young man, Bobby Joe Davis, would turn out to be the love of her life.

Bobby Joe and Bobbie were married September 8, 1956, at the First Baptist Church in Goldthwaite, Texas. They began their married life in a little upstairs garage apartment in Fort Worth, Texas before returning to Brownwood, Texas to begin their family. On August 31, 1957, they welcomed their first child, a son, Jimmy Alan. On October 28, 1959, they welcomed their second child, a son, Randall Joe. Their youngest child, a daughter, Sandra Gail, was welcomed December 23, 1962.

The family moved to Southlake, Texas where both Joe and Bobbie were active with their sons’ Cub Scout troops and Bobbie was active in WMU, the Women’s Mission Union. In 1969, Joe and Bobbie moved their family to the Denver, Colorado area. Bobbie continued to be active in the Church, selling Avon, working as Assistant Manager of Bond’s Clothing Store, and being an involved and loving wife and mother.

In the summer of 1977, Joe and Bobbie returned to their hometown of Goldthwaite, Texas. Bobbie once again went to work for the telephone company in Brownwood. She would eventually retire from GTE. She then became office manager for Dr. Gary Butka’s Goldthwaite office. All while continuing to be very active in The First Baptist Church.

Bobbie learned to sew, crochet, knit, can and preserve from a young age. She made many of the family’s clothes in their early years. In later years, one of her greatest joys was quilting with the Mullin Quilting Club, the same Club her mother was a member of. If Joe hunted it, caught it, or helped her grow it in their garden, she would can it or preserve it. There was never a shortage of delicious homegrown, homemade meals coming from her kitchen. Bobbie was also an accomplished 42 player. She and her brother, Chuck, played weekly with their Domino Club as well as participating in tournaments around the state. They made quite the team!

Bobbie was an avid genealogist. She took great pride in being the family historian. She was an active member in the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She served as the President of the CC Woodson Chapter of the DRT, for a time.

Bobbie’s greatest joy was being MeMe to her grandchildren: Caitlyn, Josie, Serena, Ashley, CJ, Amy, Rachel, and Tom, and great-grandchildren: Aidan, Kolton, Austin, Paisley, Aadi, Malakai, Garrett, Alexis, Blake, Wyatt, Charles, Riley, Crystal, Dallas, Trystan, Tucker, Tyler, Hannah, Ana, Rob, and Blake. She loved spending time with them, talking to them on the phone and face timing them.

Bobbie was preceded in death by her husband Bobby Joe Davis; her parents Preston Slaughter and Jewel Chesser Slaughter; brothers Billy and Jamie Slaughter; stepmother Alma “Mickey” Slaughter, Charlie and Allie Davis, Ronnie Davis, Gene Davis and stepbrother Gary Sutherland,

She is survived by her children, Alan, Randall, Sandra and Sharon; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brother Chuck Slaughter and Lora; stepsiblings Betty, Pauline, Leon, and Kay Sutherland; cousins Patsy, Louise, and Doyle; Alice Ann and Ross, Olga, and John, and her much loved nieces, nephews and friends.

In lieu of flowers, gifts may be given in memory of Bobbie to FBC Goldthwaite Missions fund or the Rocksprings Cemetery Association.
