The Major League Baseball reunion tour for Brownwood High School graduate Shelby Miller continued late Thursday afternoon.

Just prior to the MLB trade deadline, the Milwaukee Brewers acquired the reliever in a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Jordan Montgomery, a starting pitcher on the Texas Rangers’ 2023 world championships team who will miss the rest of the season with an injury, was also dealt from Arizona to Milwaukee for a player to be named later and cash considerations.

Miller, 34, signed with Arizona prior to the 2025 campaign after previously pitching for the Diamondbacks from 2016-18. This season, Miller has collected a career-high 10 saves with a 3-3 record with a 1.98 ERA with 40 strikeouts and only 11 walks over 36.1 innings pitched in 37 appearances. Miller is currently on the IL with a forearm strain.

His ERA is the second-lowest lowest of his career, as only the 2023 season with the Los Angeles Dodgers (1.72) is better, though he has already surpassed his number of appearances (36) and is closing in on the number of innings pitched (42) from that year.

The Brewers entered Thursday night action with a 64-44 mark, the best record in the National League. The Diamondbacks were 51-58, in fourth place in the NL West 12 games back of the Los Angeles Dodgers and nine games back in the race for the final wild card spot.

Miller signed with the Brewers in 2019 after being released by the Texas Rangers, and made five starts for Milwaukee’s Triple A squad in San Antonio. He was set to return to Milwaukee in 2020, but opted out of the COVID-shortened year.

Miller owns a 50-69 career record with a 4.03 ERA and 13 saves. He has pitched in 291 Major League games, starting 133, and tossed 912 innings with 775 strikeouts and 355 walks.

The 13th overall pick in the first round of the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals, Miller is playing in his 13th season.

Miller pitched for the Cardinals, Braves, Diamondbacks, Tigers, Texas Rangers, Chicago Cubs, Pittsburgh Pirates, San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers – a total of nine franchises overall.

Miller made his MLB debut on September 5, 2012 with St. Louis.

On May 11, 2013, Miller tossed a one-hitter with the Cardinals, retiring the final 27 Colorado Rockies batters in a row after yielding a lead-off single. Miller notched 13 strikeouts in the contest.

Miller appeared in the 2015 All-Star Game as a member of the Braves, as he posted a 3.02 ERA in 33 starts with a 6-17 record. Miller was one out away from recording a no-hitter against the Florida Marlins on May 17, 2015.
