The Brownwood ISD Secondary Teacher of the Year for 2024-25, Mendy Green is preparing for her 20th year in the education field.
“I have 19 years of teaching experience,” Green said. “I have taught at Permian High School and Bonham Junior High in Odessa. I moved to Brownwood in 2015 and have taught both 7th and 8th grade science at Brownwood Middle School – currently teaching 8th grade. When I moved to Brownwood, there was an opening at BMS so I applied and have been there ever since. I enjoy teaching science, I love my boss, I have wonderful coworkers, and the students are amazing – it’s a great place to work.”
Regarding the honor she received at the conclusion of the most recent school year, Green said, “Being BISD’s Secondary Teacher of the Year is a great honor, and I am very grateful. There are so many great teachers here in Brownwood and I feel very privileged to be considered one of them.”
As for her reasons for becoming a teacher, Green said, “The main reason I decided to go into teaching was because of teachers I had growing up and I love teaching and working with kids.”
Reflecting on her days as a student, Green said her influence to become a teacher was, “Mrs. Woodall, my biology teacher in high school. She was extremely influential. She was a great teacher. She is the reason I went into teaching Biology when I first started teaching.”
A graduate of Odessa High School, Green has amassed numerous degrees including Associate of Arts in Education from Odessa College; Associate of Arts in General Studies from Odessa College; Bachelor of Science in Criminology from the University of the Permian Basin; Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of the Permian Basin; and Master Degree of Education in Curriculum and Instruction – Science Education from the University of Texas Arlington.
As for the most rewarding aspect of teaching, Green said, “My students, when I see the ‘light bulb’ moment in a struggling student, and being able to see them grow and helping them understand the world around them a little bit better.”
Looking ahead to her future in education, Green said, “Teaching is like any other career, always evolving. One of the biggest topics right now is how Artificial Intelligence will be integrated into education. The future of teaching, in my opinion, will be impacted by AI. I recognized both advantages and disadvantages of AI, so I am curious on how this will impact my students.”
Green has two daughters, Kurstyn and Kimberlee, and a large extended family throughout the Brownwood area.
