Brownwood Lions head football coach Jeryl Brixey on Wednesday spoke about the three new assistant coach hires, which complete the high school staff for the 2025 campaign.

Former Brownwood Lions quarterbacks Graylon Brown and Colt Bertrand, along with C.J. Marsh, who played on Katy’s 2020 state championship team when Brixey was offensive coordinator, have all officially been added this week.

Brown graduated from Brownwood High School in 2011 and re-wrote the record book by passing for a single-season record 4,036 yards with 47 touchdowns in the 2010 state semifinal season.

“Graylon was a great quarterback here and played baseball at Angelo State,” Brixey said. “He’s been in private business and wanted to be a coach and has been working on it. He’s going to coach our wide receivers and help with basketball and baseball.”

Bertrand is a 2015 graduate of Brownwood High and during his senior season threw for 1,721 yards with 16 touchdowns. He signed to play football at East Texas Baptist, where current Lions offensive line coach Lee Grimes was coaching at the time.

“Colt is another quarterback that had a great career here,” Brixey said. “He did what I did in talking to him. He started out wanting to be a coach but went another way. He’s worked to get himself certified and he’s going to be coaching running backs for us.”

Marsh, along with being coached by Brixey, went on to play college football at Sam Houston and Texas Southern.

“I coached CJ at Katy and he was our quick tackle on our 2020 state championship team,” Brixey said. “He’s going to help Coach Grimes as the assistant offensive line coach. He knows what we do inside, outside, back and forth, so that’ll be a good addition for us.”

As for having the full staff intact, Brixey said, “We have a quality staff with a good mix of young guys with their hair on fire and guys that have spent years learning what to do and how to do it. It’s a great combination for us and I look forward to having it all come together. Now we have enough guys that we can get back on schedule for getting things installed, covered, coached up and polished up, and spend time getting them in shape and stronger.”
