Howard Payne University has announced two new programs, Bachelor of Arts in worship ministry and Associate Degree in general studies, that will begin in the 2025 fall semester. The addition was finalized following the HPU Board of Trustees meeting early in the spring semester.
Students earning a Bachelor of Arts in worship ministry will be trained in theology, music, leadership and ministry. The program will be a collaboration between the School of Christian Studies and the School of Education and Fine Arts. The courses offered will provide students with opportunities to consider the biblical and theological background and purpose of worship as well as provide the students with practical application. The program is designed to prepare worship ministers to be proactive in the education and application of music in the modern church.
“We are excited to offer the new Bachelor of Arts in worship ministry degree through the School of Christian Studies,” said Dr. Gary Gramling, dean of the School of Christian Studies. “We have a number of students who are gifted musically and who sense that God has called them to ministry. Our hope is that this new degree will encourage our students in their own personal worship and also equip them to lead others in worship.”
Dr. Mike Rosato, dean of the School of Education and Fine Arts, expressed his gratitude for the cooperative effort between the School of Christian Studies and the School of Education and Fine Arts.
“I am so grateful for the collaborative work accomplished between the music faculty and the Christian studies faculty to develop this, much needed, worship ministry degree,” said Dr. Rosato. “I am particularly proud of the leadership provided by Dr. Chris Rosborough, chair of the music department, and by Dr. Gramling, working collegially with their respective colleagues, and with one another, in order to make this new degree possible.”
HPU is also offering an Associate Degree in general studies. This degree is designed to provide a broad, general program for personal enrichment. It will facilitate completion of a post-secondary degree and will prepare students for successful study toward a baccalaureate degree. The Associate Degree in general studies program will provide a direct pathway to the Bachelor of Applied Arts and sciences in general studies degree program at HPU. Courses may be selected from across academic disciplines to prepare for baccalaureate degrees, careers in specific industries or complete prerequisites for licensure/certificate programs.
“This associate degree will appeal to students who want or need a 2-year program, as well as to students who desire to earn a 2-year degree as a building block for a four-year bachelor’s degree,” said Dr. Donnie Auvenshine, vice president for academic affairs.
