Judson Coalson completed 45 of 62 passes with nine touchdowns and three interceptions last week for Brownwood, which faces Shallowater and the Jim Ned JV in pool play action starting at 9 a.m. Saturday

The Brownwood Lions will compete in their second and final 7-on-7 Division II state qualifier Saturday at Jim Ned.

The Lions are coming off a 1-2 performance at their own qualifier this past Saturday, knocking off Waxahachie Life, 26-13, with losses coming against Ponder, 38-18, and Gatesville, 20-14.

At Jim Ned, the Lions will compete in Pool B beginning at 9 a.m. against Shallowater and the Jim Ned JV. Pool A consists of Jim Ned, Miles and Lubbock Christian. The two pool winners will face the two pool runners-up, and the winners of those games will square off for a berth in the 7-on-7 Division II state tournament June 26-27 in College Station.

On the Brownwood Lions Coaches Show on KOXE Wednesday, head coach Jeryl Brixey said in regard to his expectations for the team Saturday, “I’ve talked to them about getting a better tempo of getting the ball out. Even though it’s 7-on-7 and you have four seconds, I don’t want them to develop the bad habit of utilizing those four seconds. In reality, drop back passing in a football game anything after 2 ½ seconds is a bonus. See what you need to see pre-snap so you can get the ball out of your hand post-snap. Also offensively, I’d like see us practice a little bit better ball security.

“Defensively, just have your eyes where they need to be and don’t get locked in and stare at the quarterback. I want to see better route recognition and carrying the routes that we need to carry, which has improved.”

In last week’s state qualifier, Brownwood’s offense reached the end zone on nine of 17 possessions as quarterback Judson Coalson completed 45 of 62 passes with nine touchdowns and three interceptions. Carson Noe grabbed a team-best 14 receptions with four touchdowns trailed by Levi Pearson with a dozen catches and two trips to the end zone, Sirr Beam with 10 grabs and three scores, Conner Cornelius with five catches, and Durham Brown with four receptions.

The Lions defense allowed touchdowns on 11 of 19 opponent drives, but recorded three interceptions – two by Caven Webster and one by Raven Prado.
