John Roe Montgomery, Sr., a dedicated citizen and beloved family man, passed away on May 14, 2025, in Brownwood, Texas. He was born on March 22, 1938, in Enid, Oklahoma to Glayd Montgomery and Audie Fulcher Montgomery. John grew up in Wellington, Texas, where he attended school and developed a strong work ethic that would serve him well throughout his life.

John enjoyed a fulfilling career that spanned several roles. He worked as a bus driver for the city of Amarillo, where he was committed to driving the handicap bus, ensuring that everyone had access to transportation. His skills as a mechanic were put to use at various Autozone locations across Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona before he retired. John’s hands-on approach and expertise made him a respected figure in the automotive community.

In addition to his professional endeavors, John proudly served his country when he was drafted into the United States Army. He was stationed at Fort Carson, where he exemplified the values of duty and service.

On May 29, 1959, John married Eleanor Louise Anderson in Bluemound, Texas. Their union was marked by love and companionship until the passing of Louise on August 31, 2023. John cherished their time together and the memories they created throughout their years of marriage.

In his personal life, John had a passion for adventure and exploration. He loved traveling down roads he had never traveled before and always kept his camera ready to capture the stunning scenery along the way. An old car enthusiast, he relished tinkering with classic automobiles, using his mechanical skills to restore and maintain vehicles.

John is survived by his son, John R. Montgomery, Jr. of Coleman; brother, Lester Montgomery of San Francisco, California; step-brother, Joseph Montgomery of Pampa; step-sister, Rose England Morgan of Groom;  brother-in-law, R. B. Rutherford of Coleman; and four sisters-in-law: Lawanda Montgomery of Oregon, Sharon Wells of Cassoday, Kansas, LaNelle Morgan of Coleman, and Donna Johnson and husband, Larry, of Coleman. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews who will remember him fondly.

John Rowe Montgomery, Sr. was predeceased by his parents, Glayd Montgomery and Audie Fulcher Montgomery; his wife, Louise Montgomery; and his brother, Chester Montgomery. His legacy of kindness, dedication, and a love for adventure will endure in the hearts of all who knew him.

There will be no services at this time. Arrangements are entrusted to Stevens Funeral Home, 400 W. Pecan Street, in Coleman. We invite you to share fond memories and words of comfort and condolence with the Montgomery family by signing the virtual guestbook on John’s tribute page at www.stevensfuneralhome.com. Stevens Funeral Home is honored to serve the Montgomery family.
