Coleman Police Chief Marty Baker shared the following information regarding his recent resignation:

To the Citizens of Coleman,

The following letter is about my upcoming resignation as the Coleman Chief of Police. It was not my intention for this information to be publicized as early as it was. I wanted to announce it in my own time.

I had to think long and hard about what I want to say in this letter and how to address the subject due to the outpouring of concern and confusion. I have decided to keep to simple.

I came home in June 2022, accepting the Police Chief position with a handshake agreement in hopes of making Coleman a safer and better place to live. I accepted the position mainly because this is my hometown and I love Coleman. Shana and I moved here with the intention of me finishing my Law Enforcement career and retiring, but circumstances that arose in the past several months caused us to change our plans.

On Monday, April 28th, I gave a 30-plus day notice to the City Manager about my intention of resigning. She and I discussed and agreed on the terms of my leaving. My last physical workday will be May 31st.

I have accepted employment as a District Attorney Investigator for the 143rd Judicial District Attorneys Office which covers Reeves, Ward, and Loving Counties.

My current plan is to continue doing my job as Chief to the best of my ability through the end of May because there is still work that needs to be done.

I will assist the city management with the transition of duties to the new Interim Police Chief when a selection has been made.

I want to thank everyone, including all my friends and colleagues for their undying support and concerns for Shana and I during this time. The support has been overwhelming to say the least and I am leaving Coleman ni hopes that things are better than when I arrived.

May God bless the Citizens of Coleman and Coleman County. Respectfully yours and from my heart,

Marty O. Baker
