In the midst of preparing for their Class 4A Division I Region I semifinals series against Dumas, three members of the Brownwood Lady Lions softball team on Wednesday signed to continue their athletic and academic careers at the college level, including center fielder Jeniffer Romero who is headed to Schreiner University.
Coming off a first-team all-district selection in the outfield as a junior, after moving from second base her sophomore year, Romero’s senior campaign has featured a .433 batting average with nine doubles, six triples, one home run, six RBIs and 31 runs scored out of the leadoff spot in the lineup.
“I have always aspired to do something with my softball career since I was about 7,” Romero said of playing at the college level. “I’ve been playing travel ball since I was about 8, non-stop, so this was in the books for me, I just didn’t know where I wanted to go.”
Regarding why she chose Schreiner, Romero said, “I thought it was a really ideal location. It gives me a hometown feel with more options, and it’s far enough to feel like I’m going away to college. I have some family around there, too, and it’s a really nice community and the people there are really sweet.”
Romero also received interest from Oklahoma Wesleyan, Central Christian in Kansas, Lubbock Christian and Cisco before decided on Schreiner.
As for being in the third round of the playoffs in her final season of high school softball, Romero said, “It’s been great. I’m so glad we’re going out strong. We haven’t been as successful the last few years since they went to the state tournament in 2016. This has really been fun and I’m excited to see what else we can do.”
Romero said her fondest memories of her time at Brownwood High School are, “The group of girls, they’re just so much fun. We all have different personalities and it incorporates all together. My sophomore year was definitely one of the standouts. my sister was a senior and growing up I played with her so being able to do that in high school was definitely fun.”
In the classroom, Romero intends to pursue a degree in marketing.
The Lady Lions (19-11), who under head coach Cherita Munguia have made their deepest postseason run since reaching the state tournament in 2016, face No. 4 Dumas in a best of three series at Lubbock Cooper with Game 1 at 6 p.m. Thursday and Games 2 and 3, if needed, at 11 a.m. Friday.
