Dink “Colt” Benson, age 43, of Brookesmith, Texas, passed away peacefully in Daphine, Alabama. Colt was born on April 3, 1982, to James W. Benson and Sandra A. Cole in Hobbs, New Mexico.
Colt went to Sterling City High School, where he graduated in 2000. After high school, Colt went straight on the road to work for a power company. He then went into drilling, where he started as a hand and worked his way up to General Supervisor. In 2003, Colt met the love of his life, Amber Watson. Six years later, Colt finally proposed to Amber, December 22, 2009. Colt and Amber got married in Lake Charles, Louisiana. While living in Lake Charles, Colt and Amber had Levi and Brookelyn. January 2012, Colt found out he had Testicular Cancer. He went through surgery, a port put in, and three rounds of chemotherapy, all while working. Unfortunately, Colt and Amber were told that they may not be able to have any more children.
In 2013, when they moved to Brookesmith, Texas, a miracle happened, and they found out they were pregnant with Layne. Layne was born on November 24, 2014.
While settling in Brookesmith, Colt went back to work. All while Amber started obtaining animals, so every time Colt came home, Amber had a new animal. But Colt never won, and Amber got to keep all the animals. Which includes a dog, horse, pig, goat, one chicken, and three cats that Colt “didn’t like”, all along with their three wild children.
Colt enjoyed drinking his coffee on the front porch and watching the sun rise while it was quiet and peaceful. He also enjoyed watching football, fishing, hunting, shooting his guns, ranch work, attending to all the animals that Amber brought home, and being outdoors. He enjoyed learning about history and geography. He also enjoyed hanging out with his co-worker and telling old drilling stories. He enjoyed hanging out with his family, which included teaching his kids how to play football and basketball, and how to shoot guns, and how to do outside chores. He also taught his daughter how to wrestle so she could take care of herself, and he always supported what she wanted to do.
Colt survived by his wife Amber Benson, three children, Levi, Brookelyn, and Layne Benson. His mother, Sandra Benson; mother and father-in-law, Sharon and Lonnie Coats; sister, Missy Brown and husband, Scott; sisters-in-law, Jennifer, Stacie, and Melissa. His aunts, Becky and Barbara, and his uncle Allen.
Colt was preceded in death by his grandparents, father, James W, Benson, Sister Kim Hallmark, and two aunts, Pat and Carolyn.
Colt will be remembered by his big personality, his smile, he was funny and smart, his cooking, his giving to others, his dancing to any kind of music, chasing his kids around, and the love he had for everyone. He loved his wife Amber and his children with all his heart and soul. He would help anyone in need; he loved his work family and would always speak highly of them. He was an avid horseman and loved animals. His future for his family was to have cattle and horses as a legacy for his family.
A celebration of life for Colt will be on Thursday May 1, 2025, at 3 p.m. at Blaylock Funeral Home. Arrangements are under the direction of Blaylock Funeral Home.
