The Brownwood Police Department issued the following press release Thursday morning:
On November 13, 2024, Detectives with the Brownwood Police Department received a report of a possible improper relationship between a student and educator. In the report, it was believed that the offense occurred within our jurisdiction. Detective Peyton Donahoo received the report and commenced an investigation.
The initial report alleged that 25-year-old Lily Victoria Janek of Brownwood, while employed as a teacher/coach for the Mullin Independent School District, began a relationship with a Mullin High School student.
Detective Donahoo learned that Janek, on multiple occasions, invited the student to her home in Brownwood where it was alleged that sexual activity occurred. This allegation was confirmed during subsequent interviews with Janek and others associated with the report.
Detective Donahoo presented the case to the April session of the Brown County Grand Jury and a single indictment for Improper Relationship Between Educator and Student was returned. Bond was set at $50,000.
On Wednesday, April 23, 2025, Janek was contacted at her residence and arrested for the warrant.
Mullin ISD issued its own press release Wednesday stating:
Today, a former Mullin ISD employee was arrested for allegedly engaging in an inappropriate relationship with one our of students. The District had been notified on Friday, April 4, 2025, that a Mullin ISD employee had confessed to inappropriate conduct with a high school student. After receiving the letter from law enforcement, we reported the employee’s conduct to Child Protective Services (CPS), suspended the employee, banned her from all school property and school-related activities. On Monday, April 7, 2025, the Board of Trustees voted to terminate the employee from her employment with Mullin ISD, and the Superintendent filed a report to the Texas Education Agency (TEA) about the employee’s conduct. Since receiving notification of her confession, all District administrators, faculty and staff have been and will continue to fully cooperate with all local and state agencies, including local law enforcement, CPS, and TEA.
The safety and security of our students is our highest priority, and at this time we are focused on them, even while cooperating with all investigative agencies. During the last few weeks and continuing through the end of school, we have offered additional counseling services to our families through our school psychologist and our contract with Texas Child Health Access through Telemedicine (TCHAT). While we are sickened by the conduct of this former employee, we know that this incident is not a reflection of the many exceptional educators teaching in classrooms across the District. We are committed to supporting the students and families impacted and ending the school year strong for all our of children.
Janek previously coached at Brookesmith ISD and played basketball at Howard Payne University.
