Three Lady Lions state track entrants own fastest qualifying times

Brownwood’s 4×100 and 4×200 relays and Kaya Phillips in the 200 meters were the fastest Class 4A girls in the state of Texas this past weekend.

Of the Region I-4A champion Brownwood Lady Lions’ seven entrants into the UIL Class 4A Track and Field State Championships, set for Thursday, May 1 at the University of Texas’ Myers Stadium in Austin, three of those produced the fastest times across the state during regional competition this past weekend.

The UIL on Monday released all its state track and field qualifiers and the Lady Lions 4×100 relay of Icess Hall, Kaya Phillips, Jade Morin and Aniah Hines ran a school record 47.07 to earn the Region I-4A championship, and that is the best among the 4A girls state field. Joining Brownwood at state will be sprint relay teams from Celina (47.28), Tyler Chapel Hill (47.63), Katy Freeman (47.76), Gilmer (47.89), Madisonville (48.25), Decatur (48.34) Comal Canyon Lake (48.84) and Cuero (49.93).

The Region I-4A champion Lady Lions 4×200 relay of Jade Morin, Kaya Phillips, Aniah Hines and Kate Tindol also posted a new school record time of 1:39.73 at regionals, which again was the best in the state. The rest of the state field will feature Huffman Hargrave (1:40.75), Stafford (1:40.85), Celina (1:40.85), Tyler Chapel Hill (1:40.93), Gilmer (1:41.22), Bandera (1:41.81), Decatur (1:42.82) and Comal Canyon Lake (1:44.4).

Kaya Phillips also captured the Region I-4A championship in the 200 meters, with a state-best time of 24.32. Phillips will compete at state against Jazmine Rhodes of Stafford (24.55), Tiana Peck of Katy Freeman (24.77), Kinlee Lawlis of Bandera (24.77), Dihan Tippins of Little Cypress-Mauriceville (24.97), Maliya Curry of Manor New Tech (25.01), Naomi Jones of Dallas Lincoln (25.1), Alondria Nelson of Gilmer (25.16), and Kealani Weeks of Midland Greenwood (25.38).

Brownwood’s fourth regional champion, Hannah Deen in the high jump, carries the second-best state-wide performance into the finals with an effort of 5-5. Deen trailed only Chiora Enyinna-Okeigbo of Sunnyvale (5-6) and Rocsan Hadnot of Jasper (5-6), while the rest of the field consists of JaKayla Teague of Carthage (5-5), Roselyn Spencer of Paris North Lamar (5-5), Paisley Janssen of Cuero (5-5), Jordan Mitchell of Lorena (5-4), Anna Green of Bridgeport (5-4) and Sloane Paugh of Floresville (5-4).

Among Brownwood’s regional silver medalists, the Lady Lions 4×400 relay of Kate Tindol, Jade Morin, Rebekkah Delgado and Braycee Lee, which set another school record of 3:56.49 at regionals, ranks fifth among state qualifiers. The rest of the qualifiers are Canyon (3:50.78), Dallas Carter (3:53.51), Stafford (3:53.58), Gilmer (3:55.97), Huffman Hargrave (3:57.46), Decatur (3:57.77), Comal Davenport (3:58.95) and Lago Vista (4:00.61).

Kate Tindol in the 300-meter hurdles owns the fifth-best regional time at 44.017 and will compete against Chiora Enyinna-Okeigbo of Sunnyvale (41.46), Madison Sweezer of Houston Yates (42.71), Janey Baker of China Spring (42.8), Tenera Gray of Canyon (43.45), Brooklyn Kinsey of Canyon Randall (44.02), Aubrey Avey of Comal Canyon Lake (44.11), Kyndal Thurman of Lindale (44.28) and Eleanor Kazanjian of Kingsville King (44.43).

Kaya Phillips qualified in the long jump as well, with the seventh-best jump of 18-6.5. The remainder of the competitors are Arieanna Jefferson of Ferris (20-6), Chiora Enyinna-Okeigbo of Sunnyvale (19-3), Kinlee Lawlis of Bandera (18-9.25), Trinity Anscombe of Robstown (18-9.25), Tenera Gray of Canyon (18-8.75), Eleanor Kazanjian of Kingsville King(18-7.5), Madison Cuplin of Marble Falls (18-1), and LaBrayia Waalee of Jasper (18-0).

Myers Stadium at the University of Texas

9 a.m. – Brownwood’s Hannah Deen, Class 4A girls high jump

10:45 a.m. – Brownwood’s Kaya Phillips, Class 4A girls long jump

5 p.m. – Brownwood girls 4×100 relay

6:40 p.m. – Brownwood girls 4×200 relay

7:35 p.m. – Brownwood’s Kate Tindol, Class 4A girls 300-meter hurdles

7:55 p.m. – Brownwood’s Kaya Phillips, Class 4A girls 200 meters

8:45 p.m. – Brownwood girls 4×400 relay
