The American Legion was founded in 1919 and is based on the “Four Pillars of the American Legion” being: (1) Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation (2) National Security (3) Americanism and (4) Children and Youth.
In the American Legion, the month of April is designated Children and Youth Month. The American Legion’s dedication to Children and Youth is found in several areas:
- Nationally: Temporary Financial Assistance (grants for Veterans and Veterans Families) and providing legislative testimony and being an advocate for Children and Youth.
- State level: supports the Special Olympics and financial assistance for children that have special needs.
- Post level: Boys and Girls Clubs & Boy Scouts. Each Post community is different and the Post should be involved.
Recently, American Legion Post #196 – Brownwood hosted a fundraising event at the Brownwood Claybird Club. With the help of local businesses and individuals, we raised monies that could be dispersed back into our community. A few of the ways are: Monetary School Scholarships and American Legion Boys and Girls State.

The American Legion Veterans & Childrens Foundation feeds and houses children of military personnel and veterans facing hardships such as evictions and basic needs. The foundation relies on donations and since its inception, the foundation has provided over $18 million dollars in grants to struggling military families. Additionally, over $1 million dollars has been donated from “local Posts” in support of Children’s Charities.
