LUBBOCK – One of the most historic seasons for the Brownwood Lady Lions track and field program reached new heights Saturday, capturing the Region I-4A team championship at Lowrey Field and locking up 7 berths in the UIL Class 4A Track and Field State Championships in the process.
The Lady Lions – who have won every meet in which the full team has competed this season – generated 113 points at regionals, 38 more than runner-up Canyon (75), and claimed four gold medals. Entering Saturday’s running finals, the Lady Lions were in third place in the team standings with 29 points, trailing Canyon Randall (42) and Monahans (32).
The Brownwood girls relay teams continued to rewrite the history books Saturday, as the 4×100 relay of Icess Hall, Kaya Phillips, Jade Morin and Aniah Hines earned the regional title in a time of 47.07 – breaking the school record of 47.31 they set Friday in the preliminaries.
Meanwhile, the 4×200 relay of Jade Morin, Kaya Phillips, Aniah Hines and Kate Tindol also claimed a gold medal in a school record time of 1:39.73, topping the record of 1:40.16 they had also set the day prior.
Kaya Phillips locked up her third goal medal of the day in the 200 meters, coasting to the regional championship in a time of 24.32 – more than one second faster than the nearest competitior.
On Friday, Hannah Deen captured the first of Brownwood’s four regional championships in the high jump with a best effort of 5-5, earning the second trip to state in her high school career.
The top two finishers in each event advance to the UIL Class 4A Track and Field State Championships Thursday, May at 1 at the University of Texas’ Myers Stadium in Austin.
Back to Saturday action, Kate Tindol finished second by a toenail in the 300-meter hurdles, as 3 one-thousandths of a second – 44.017 to 44.020 – separated the Lady Lion senior from third-place Brooklyn Kinsey of Canyon.
Kaya Phillips, who came in third place at the area meet in the long jump, pulled off one of the biggest upsets of regionals as she finished second with a leap of 18-6.5 to punch another ticket to Austin.
The 4×400 relay team will be joining the state party as Kate Tindol, Jade Morin, Rebekkah Delgado and Braycee Lee finished in a second-place time of 3:56.49, setting a new school record, but finishing behind Canyon (3:50.78), which set a new regional meet record. The previous school record of 3:56.94 was established earlier this year.
The Lady Lions just missed out on two more state berths as Grace Sparks in the pole vault (11-0) and Rebekkah Delgado in the 800 meters (2:20.22) both finished third. The top third-place finisher from all four regions across the state earn the ninth “wild card” state berth, but neither Lady Lion were able to secure the wild card.
On the boys side, the Lions finished with 4 points, which left them tied for 26th place. Generating the points for the Brownwood boys was Trae Jones was a fourth-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles (15.02).
